How to engrave different shades

Hi, I’m new to laser engraving. I have been working with this image. I have been able to trace and adjust the tracing so that it captures the detail in the trunk and some of the darkest leaves. I also have been able to adjust it so it traces the complete outline and all the leaves. I assume I have to assign these 2 traces to different layers. What I am having trouble with is tracing so I get just light gray leaves, medium gray leaves or dark gray leaves. Is there a way to engrave this to get different shades of leaves or can it only be done with one shading? Any help would be appreciated

The variables you can control:

How hot the laser burns

How slow/fast the laser moves

How tightly space the lines are

The angle the laser moves over the piece- to include cross hatching

How many time the laser moves over the same place

Set your layers with different variable settings and see your results. Take notes, because it sucks to get the results you want in testing and then forget how to reproduce them.

Different shades? Have you tried burning it as an Image?

Here is an experiment I did to get different shades of color when engraving on wood. The elements were put on separate layers and engraved at different power settings.

Curious, was this faster than using a single bitmap image with raster?

My guess is that there is probably not much difference in the engraving time between this as a vector vs. a bitmap image. My experiment was intended to see what could be done with vector graphics. Since the original poster said he had traced the image, I assumed he was interested in using vector graphics.

Thanks for the detail. I love hearing about new procedures.
