How to remove the dark background of an image

I am trying to get the image of mickey and minnie mouse with the current shading effect but want to get rid of the full shaded background. I tried closing the open sections of their shoes that are connecting them to the background but am unable to make this work. Here is the file I am working on.

Ungroup your tracing, then delete the parts you don’t want.

After Ungroup remove Layer 13.

I tried that but the outline shape of the mice are connected to the border/background.
