I’m guessing it doesn’t recognize 640x480 and needs to be 1280x1024?
No it does not necessarily have to be impossible, I sometimes have the same message and then the “connection” comes anyway after a little adjustment of the pattern template. Try covering your bed with some neutral surface (cardboard or similar) and try again.
