Im having issues with getting the laser to burn

I’m using an Ender 3 S1 with the 5W laser engraver add-on, running professional firmware version 2.1.3. I’m connected to the machine via USB. In LightBurn, I can move the laser, but when I start a job, it runs without burning the design. I’ve tried switching between M3/M4 and M106/M107, and changing the “S” value from 255 to 1000, but it still doesn’t burn. I’m new to laser engraving and LightBurn, so im not really sure what i’m doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is a “professional” firmware? Never heard of that. What flavor is that firmware of? Marlin?

Which type did you select in LightBurn?

I’m on the free trial of light burn, flavor is Marlin, and the Professional firmware I got from Github Not sure too much about it Other than it has a lot more features Then what My machine came with And laser engraving is one of the features

If the laser lights up at all, the machine is likely running too fast to make an impression.

Set the speed units to mm/min, rather than mm/s or in/min, then run a Material Test with speeds from about 10 mm/min up through 1000 mm/min.

Hello, sorry for the late reply. The laser does come on, but I have to turn it on from the machine itself. I can’t turn it on or off from LightBurn or do anything with the laser beam itself. Everything works perfectly in LightBurn; I can move the laser around, send it to the home position, and it will even start a design and run through the whole thing as if it’s burning it, but the laser is stuck at the low test power.

A link to that would help, as it seems likely there’s a firmware and hardware mismatch.

Have you run through the GRBL configuration help?

It seems optimized for 3D printing, but the wiki doesn’t include anything related to “engraving”, “laser”, “speed”, or “spindle”, so it’s not obvious how this will improve the machine for laser use.

Unless you have a compelling reason, reverting to the stock Ender firmware seems a better idea, if only because everybody around here will offer suggestions based on assumptions the firmware behaves in the usual way.

Yeah, that’s what I did. Reverted back to the stock firmware, and now I can’t control anything in LightBurn. So, I think I’m going to re-download my professional firmware and just move on. I was just on the free trial, so I’m not out anything, but thank you for your help.

Sorry the first link was from an earlier version of the firmware. This link contains the add-on laser Module.
