I'm not able to cut or engrave anything

Hello everyone,

I’m having trouble engraving and cutting with Lightburn. I think there may be some settings I’m not putting. I have a Sculpfun S9 and the issues I’m having so far is that every project I tried to make, the laser frames it perfectly, but when I hit Start, it engraves lines within the frame and then goes way outside of the frame (the result is nothing like the project)

I searched for existing teoubleshooting steps but nothing seems to work. I can add screenshots if requested.

Yes, screenshots of your settings will help. Additionally, post the output if you send the $$-command in the console window.

Here are some tips for setting everything up: Quick Start & Overview - Diode Laser Wiki

Thank you for responding!

I will attach some screenshots here, please let me know if you want more.

Those settings look basically OK, though I spot two things:

  • you enabled a laser offset in device settings. That’s wrong. There is no offset.
  • you added the laser as type “grbl-m3”. That’s also wrong. You need to add it as “grbl”.

Additionally, I’d recommend turning off “return to finish position”, since you don’t have a stable 0,0-position without limit switches.

We need another screenshot of the firmware settings. Either open the machine settings window, or send $$ in the console window and copy the output.

Thank you for replying.

I turned off the offset and modified the type to grbl.
I will attach the additional pictures. It still moves away from the frame.

Thank you!

Can someone please help? I’m a bit stuck and can’t engrave anything :frowning: .

I can’t help as I use a fiber laser but have you rewatched youtube videos on how to set up lightburn? I have to admit I made a few mistakes when I set mine up.

I’m struggling to understand the problem - it frames in one spot, returns to the starting position, then when the job is started, it goes somewhere else entirely? Without changing anything in the settings?

Edit: Looking at the settings I also notice that you have the S-Value set to 255, while the machine has a 1000… I’m 90% sure they have to match, or you get unexpected results. But it shouldn’t affect position, just power.

Nothing works unfortunately :frowning: , I don’t understand why it frames correctly but moves outside the frame and does random movements.

Is it actually random? Or does it go through the project, just in a wrong position?

If it’s not the movements of the project, check how it’s moving - is it doing the opposite?

Any chance some wires are wrong? Double check that everything is wired right.

I tried the laser with LaserGBRL (free program) and it works great, not in details and it’s really limited, but it always engraves in the frame. When I use Lightburn it frames a project, I tried that keychain example, it frames correctly but when I start the project it goes outside the frame and starts doing random lines, I even tried with straight lines and simple shapes. It just goes random.

That suggests that the communication between Lightburn and the Laser has some issues… I’d say remove the laser entirely from Lightburn, and add it fresh, making sure to follow the guides in the docs. There are also dedicated guides for the Sculpfun S9, though I use a different machine and don’t have any links handy. But it’s a popular machine.

Thank you. I will try to uninstall and reinstall everything.

And show a picture of the output. If it does random lines, it could be the case that LB detected a pirated license. Make sure your license is valid and only bought at the official homepage.

Guys, sorry for the late update. I found out what the problem was.

First issue was that I got the Lightburn software from a recommended site, not from the original website, as soon as I got the software from Lightburn directly it worked like a charm.

Second issue, the laser kept wobbling during engraving and cutting. After adjusting the special nut on the bottom wheel everything was fixed.

I can now say that I finally have a laser that works 100%

Thank you all for the support!
