Inconsistent engraving on Woo

I am using a 30W NEJE Laser Engraver Module 450nm 7.5W Output Optical Power Module. It is on the frame of an old XYZ3dprrinter. I am using a Arduino/CNC shield running GRBL 1.1 orgreater.

I am trying to egnrave an image ont a piece of wood. The variations in the wood grain seem to be affecting the quality of the images. As shown below

For sure any variation in the wood will affect output:

  1. grain
  2. wood density
  3. knots
  4. color variation
  5. sap or oils

Also, any coating or contamination can have a dramatic affect on ability to burn. You’ll see this a lot with composites or wood meant for crafting as they’ll have adhesives or other coatings applied.

The material on the left of the first photo looks like it’s been treated with something. I’ve seen similar results with treated wood.

Some of this you’ll just have to deal with and adjust your settings accordingly. Some tips to improve things:

  1. try sanding the surface to remove any surface treatment
  2. stick to clean untreated hardwoods
  3. test a burn on cardboard or some other very consistent material to make sure that your machine is performing acceptably
  4. you could potentially experiment with pretreating with baking soda or borax for difficult materials. They result in a very different type of burn so you’ll need to decide if that works for your needs.
