Job starts then stops after a few seconds

That’s not the center of your defined work area. You have it defined as 15" X and 14.96" Y, not sure why it’s not 15" exact in both directions. Center would be 7.5". not 7.75". That is probably why you’re going out of bounds. Set your X position at 7.5" and try it.

Rather than wasting more material, run your tests on cardboard.

Just a side note, if you work in mm instead of inches, math is soooo much easier.

You are my new Best Friend! Did that and and so far has done over 12 passes and going strong. I hopefully wont make that mistake again. Also all the test’s where done at 90min @ 10% once I knew that something was screwy but now that piece will be used as test material. As far as using metric you are probably right but I’m 74 and never had to use the metric system but a couple of times. I’m like the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” :joy: :upside_down_face:  However, I will try to learn it.

Well, I’m not exactly a young pup at 59, but since starting with lasers I have learned to think in metric. I spent many of my early years as a frame and trim carpenter so it was a bit of an adjustment for me as well.

One trick that I use when estimating sizes is that 25mm is very close to an inch, so if I see something that says it’s 100mm I interpret that pretty easily as about 4".

Anyway, I’m glad we were able to find and correct your issue. Happy Lasering!

Well, Tim, being 74 you ARE a young pup! . I do like your method of 25mm = 1". :+1: :+1:. That will help. Thanks.

You know that the change from mm to inches is just the push of one button in your top menu bar, right?

I switch back and forth constantly. I am ambi-metrious, I guess.

Did you understand the issue of overscan? To get that laser head flying back and forth along the gantry, the machine needs space to accelerate and decelerate. That is shown by the red smudge outlines on your preview page. The harder you push the top speed, the larger those red borders will grow. If you ask the machine to go to fast, you can actually make it take longer to complete a job.

Hi, Jim. At first I did not really understand the Overscan. But between you and Tim now I do. Pretty simple concept the way the two of you explained it. One of many reasons I love this forum. Members will hang in there and help until the answer is found(or in my case finally sinks in :joy: :upside_down_face:).

No, I did not. Are you talking about the button just to the right of the Rotate option? If so it will switch to Inches mm/min but it will not go back to Inches /min.

That button will change your layout measure system from metric to inches.

It does not change the speed of you laser, just how the interface shows you the measurements. I am not that young, but I tend to work on mm’s.

Ok, thanks for that clarification. And I know I need to start using mm’s and I guess the more I use it the more I will understand the system.

I wish US had changed to the metric system 30 years ago. Much simpler system.

Yes that’s what I have heard, but this old dog never had a use for it, until now!! :upside_down_face: So I am going to start using it. Like I said the more I use it the easier it should become.

Here is a user tip for you…

I opened settings and edited the Shape Move Increments to match up with the GRID settings. Selected itmes will bump 1mm with CTRL+arrow, 5mm with arrow and shift+arrow bumps them 20mm. I set my Grid spacing to 10 mm.

Shown here with a 1mmx2mm rectangle, blue circles are 10mm spaced.

zoom in on the grid and it will divide by 10 again. Same 1mmx2mm black rectangle.

Thanks, Jim. I can see where this will help me in my learning process!
