Joining and breaking a drawing into several pieces

I am using my laser for marquetry. I had partial success by using trace in Inkscape but separated components shapes were not good fit to ajacent pieces. I have been working to improve the fit of components into the pocket, but am unable to get joins of component shapes so as to be able to group and ungroup components.

Can anyone help me to join the drawing of the duck labeled Test1. Once joined I need to be able to then separate the components into pieces (discrete files) Each component will be burned/cut from a different color veneer and fit into the pocket (red outline).

I have been searching the net, forums, and YouTube for how to do this but without success. Help with technique (joining and then splitting into separate components would be appreciated.

If I understand you and this is what you want, I think the only way to do it is with node editing. In order to separate, each one needs to be a separate closed shape.

Thanks for the reply, I have come to the same conclusion.

keeping YouTube busy I found a video that is a help too and combined with node editing helps. It is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE2hERwFn6o .

I find that a combination of Inkscape and Lightburn for some of the editing and I can get the job done.
