Large area Diode Lasers - when does it stop being hobby-grade and what do you actually use large working area for?

I just joined Tyvok Spider S1 group. As a starter & hobbyist, I don’t think i have the ability to get maintain a large n(4’ x 8’) and high-powered machine but i really want to have a try. I want to know what kind of projects you guys plan to make, and whether there are any ideas and suggestions for hobbyists to start making profits.

Hi Tina

I also have been watching the S1 for quite a while. I probably should join some group but I dont do social media.

I would like if there were more videos and info available but I keep finding the same promotional stuff. Saying that, it is what it is…most likely!

I think the variety of projects that could be done would suit small batch production and bespoke larger pieces and the chances of success depend on location, effort and value offering.

Very interesting, a 4’x8’ Laser/CNC Mill for $3k is not bad, I think. I do think the spot diameters might have been exaggerated and I am not sure how a belt drive CNC will perform when milling. Just don’t be the first to buy one. Let the market test it first.

With any large machine you start to encounter issues that scale with size: namely rigidity and accuracy. There are certainly applications for large machines that can get away with less of those attributes.

I recall one user we saw at Open Sauce that was using LightBurn and a HUGE diode laser to cut massive panels of fabric that were assembled together into big inflatable sculptures.

The MGM9 rails seem to be designed for heavy load, Vertical and horizontal and GT2 belts for precision and longevity.

Mod 5 ?..is that an engineering Term/standard.

I think the 0.8 x 0.6 dot dimms is probably for the 20w with a better than average lens.

I’m wondering if the 4ft × 4ft would be a better choice in terms of optimal functioning of fans and drive system, with a foldaway support table for full sheet use.

To mil or not to mil…I wouldnt see myself using that function but it would certainly tidy things up on the edges..but would it be very slow in operation.

I’m holding of till I see the armoured USB cable with extra ferrites!!
