Laser cutting polyurethane foam for a camera case

Has anyone any parameters for cutting 1" thick polyurethane foam? I have a 40w diode laser.

I would be very cautious cutting polyurethane with a laser. Decomposition products can include nasties such as hydrogen cyanide among others.

might want to research a little before stating this. PU foam is laser safe.

OP
Not sure about parameter’s though as I only have used a CO2 for cutting it.

I was pretty sure PU (foam or otherwise) produced HCN when it undergoes thermal decomposition but to make sure I did check before posting that I was correct. Perhaps there is a laserable PU but that wasn’t specified in the OP’s post.

According to the Maker Industry website, they claim most of it’s laser safe, but add …

Unfortunately, some versions are prone to off-gassing, so you might have to wear a breathing mask and use a vent hood when laser cutting this material.

I’d ensure it was laser safe before assuming it’s laser safe… Assumption tend to lead people down the wrong path.

I hope it’s generally OK, as there are lots of posts where people are lasing it for packing other sensitive items.

From what I have linked to… an 80W co2 cuts 1.5" PU 15mm/s@10% … might go from there.
