Laser has cut MDF fine, now struggles, also not working fine when running a cut and engraving

Hi there, first time posting on a forum so not 100% how it works but here goes…

I recently got the Two Trees TTS-10 Pro Laser Cutter, I was able to cut a piece I created through 3mm MDF when I just got the unit (I am still very much learning), but I am getting very frustrated with myself.

I have cut another 3mm MDF piece yesterday, it went fine and looks nice, after that I did another also with 3mm MDF (Since it did not want to cut through 4mm Shutterply), I struggled to get it to cut through even though it was on the same setting as my first cut and on the same material, now I am trying to do the exact cut as yesterday but just with different writing, now it does the cut (On 3 runs on full power setting) but when it needs to engrave it runs but does not do any engraving).

I did a few circles last night to test the speed and power of each instead of wasting wood on fails, but seems it only cuts properly now on constant power mode.

I am doing something wrong but I don’t know what, PLEASE help?

I would try cleaning lens.

Checked the lens but was clean, I am able to cut and engrave now but only with setting on “constant power”.

You are running in mm/mm?

Do you have air assist?

Is it the same piece of MDF? Is the MDF sold as “laser safe”? If not, it’s likely held together with urea formaldehyde glue which, in addition to producing toxic fumes when cut, also produces a horrible charry burn. Other less toxic glues (such as PVA - woodworking glue) still produce horrible charry burns too.

Laser safe materials are generally made with melamine glue, so it’s important to use “laser-safe” materials, as most random ones you find at home depot and the ilk are not good for lasering.

Running in mm/min and with air assist.

It is the same MDF, bought from a hobby/laser shop.

Still leaning toward a dirty lens. My lens had barely visible film on it. I decided to check and clean it because things just got harder to cut. After cleaning I was able to reduce power and increase speed.

I was planning to clean anyway when I saw your reply, but I tried again now to engrave without constant power, even on very low PWR and speed, and it’s working fine now, not sure why it didn’t work before, but will still just clean the lens just to be sure. Thank you.

Ooookay, after I sent my previous reply I re-checked and it didn’t actually engrave anything, I did however look through my settings and saw it was in mm/sec instead of mm/min (Diode), this must have happened after I re-installed the software on another device before I started cutting again, so to say this was an ID10T error on my side. Thanks all for the help.
