I just ordered my AtomStack X7 and am going to make some hat patches when I get it. I know some people put masking tape on leather to help keep the laser from charring the leather for the cut setting. My question is if I want to engrave it first, is it possible to have lightburn stop after the engraving to add tape and then proceed to cut the leather?
Of course!
You can:
- Disable the cut layer
- Do your engraving
- mask up
- disable your engrave layer, enable your cut layer
5.Start cutting again.
You’ll need to figure out some way to tape up the leather without moving, or have some kind of alignment in place so you can put it back exactly where it was.
It may be more practical to cut the leather first, make many blank patches, then put several into a fixture so you can engrave them in batches.
However, you must tune up the laser mechanics for reliable engraving, as we’ve seen horror stories from folks with unreliable machines wrecking batches of products. Although this guide is written for Sculpfun lasers, the mechanics will be familiar:

After that, search the forum for “fixture” to get an idea of what’s involved.
Is there an option for lightburn to stop the laser after it gets done with one layer?
Yes, there’s a little switch next to the layer to turn it off.
