Lightburn Dumping Losing Connection

So, it’s been a while and everything has been working great, I even upgraded my xTool D1 Pro to a 30w. New power supply and all. I’ve been running the laser in the garage from my computer in the den. about 100ft away using a USB extender powered at both ends. I seems to lose connection though “SOMETIMES”. Here is the output -

Weird thing is I can still control the laser! I can see it in the camera right where it stops and hit origin and it goes back to origin. I can then move it down and start again and sometimes it’ll run just fine. Does anyone have anything different than what’s posted already? I’ve moved it to the front USB ports to be on a different controller. I’ve turned off the Windows USB power save function in each controller. I’ve force updated firmware and have a 64GB MicroSD card in the machine. The machine itself is on it’s own breaker in the garage. But it randomly just does this…Please send help!

Side note this last time Lightburn locked up totally I had to restart it. I also noticed I had 2 cameras attached as well so I disconnected one. I also took the "32GB MicroSD card out brought it to computer and it had 1kb file on it so I deleted it. Started it again with just one line and it lost connection again…

This is the code again -

I also forgot I’m running it @ 200mm/s @ 60% power for engrave and 7mm/s @ 80% power for cut on 6mm solid maple board. The file when I do one row is 550kb but it still does it. Sometimes it’ll do the whole row and sometimes it won’t when I double it it always dumps…

The maximum length of a powered USB extender varies based on the USB version and the type of extender used, but generally, they can extend USB 2.0 signals up to 30 meters (98 feet) and USB 3.0/3.1 signals up to 18 meters (59 feet)

The bold is mine. I saw distance numbers up to 100 meters, Everything says “up to” but fails to say “under ideal conditions”.

It sounds like you are at the ragged edge of your equipment.

Hello, I’m using an extender that has worked with a 100ft top quality cat5 line and I’ve never had any problems until now. The problem is after it says its lost connect and stops. I can still control it and move it around I never loose camera. It just stops, says lost connection and it’s done. It’s almost like Lightburn drops the file around 3 to 4 minutes into the send. I’ve done other burns way longer with bigger files. I am however going to shorten the USB cable coming from the extender to see if that help tomorrow. I think that ones 10’ to 15’ long and I’ve got it all rolled up. I’ll let you guys know how it goes…

Any chance the USB energy saver mode was reset after a Windows update?

Just checked again, and there all unchecked. Gonna try different cables and routing. Move power brick and air supply…and so forth. I’ll let you guys know what’s up

Okay it’s the afternoon and I just noticed the laser temp jumped up to 37c but when I started it was around 30c and it ran fine. but once it dumped again I noticed the temp had gone up quite a bit. I think it’s mode hopping and when it does it glitches. Does that sound right?

This kinda appears to be electrical noise to me - what does your connection path from PC to laser look like? A pic helps!

Hello Colin, I’m running aa 100ft CAT5 cable through my attic into the garage where it drops straight down to the table where my xTool D1 Pro is. All power cords are routed away from the USB connections. I got it to run for about 40 minutes before it started it’s dump thing again.

My computer is about 2’ from ceiling on a shelf and the USB is in the top. It goes through a hole in the ceiling and then runs the length of my bedroom to the living room and then punches through the wall in the garage and drops straight down to the machine. There’s nothing in the attack to create noise like electrical or HVAC. This should work fin right? Do I need to put in a separate 20amp breaker just for it. I did go from a 10w laser to a 30w laser. Yes, the new laser came with a new power supply.

Well, there’s your problem.

You’ll need to be directly connected to your laser with a standard-length USB cord to have reliability.

Where are those USB extenders? Are they in the attic?

No, ones near computer and the other is in the garage. I think it maybe the file? I took the 3,128kb file and made it smaller taking out lines of coins, so there were only 2. It did it but then started dumping again when the temp came up in the garage. So, the new file size is only 600kb - one row of coins and I’m waiting till it’s cooler outside to work. I have dog tags to do for the military though and with this going on, no way I can dump a run of a bunch of dog tags! I know they don’t cost much but still it’s the work… I’m going to rearrange breakers in the house and add some 20amp instead of 15amp and make it so interference isn’t an issue then go from there I guess. I might need to just bite the bullet and convert my garage into an actual room, ac and all. I think the heat and the laser getting hot causing mode jumping might be the cause as well…

Based on your last posting, I would tend to agree.

Maybe not A/C the entire garage, just the immediate work area. Single hose units are cheaper, but dual cools the indoor area with not sucking in outside air.

Okay I went out and there’s a really cool breeze today through the garage. The temp on the front of the laser says 25c today. so I started a run of two rows of coins. If it runs without glitching, I will assume it’s due to heat and mode jumping. On a side note I am going to clear my garage and put in the ceiling finally so I can use one of the portable ac units to cool out there. I’ve been meaning to do it for a long time. I’ll let you know what the outcome is…

Hi again, not sure if this might be a contributing factor but the laser is running fine in the morning but it keeps interrupting the code being pushed by telling me what machine I’m using and the version. Except now the machine keeps on going…??? Any reason why it would do that?

That means the controller is resetting and restarting, which involves flushing its internal command buffer, then picking up with whatever comes next. The result depends on exactly what commands were lost during the kefuffle; the fact that you don’t notice anything doesn’t mean it’s all good.

As they say in finance, “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.”

In this case, the machine faces a number of challenges, any one of which will cause failures, and they’re collaborating to bring it down. Reducing any single challenge may help, but won’t produce reliable operation until you eliminate all of them.
