Lightburn Line and Fill don’t match

Hey all! I just got my XTool D1 Pro two weeks ago and I have been loving it!

I have found that when I have my machine do an outline, and then a fill, that the fill will not be inside the outline. What makes it weirder is that the fill IS inside the lines towards the center of the work area, but more offset towards the outside of the machine.

This is also a repeated occurrence that has happened with all my projects not just one.

Here is what I have done to troubleshoot based on this forum:

  • Check my machine is square (It is)
  • Check tightness of all three belts (they are right but not too tight)
  • Double check lightburn X and Y acceleration (picture posted of machine settings)
  • Check the optical shaft and shaft coupler (it has a slight bow, but the problem is in the X not the Y)
  • Checked that all rails were free and clear of debris
  • I have not yet updated firmware, and I got it secondhand, so I guess that may be the case!

I have included a few pictures. This is a second hand machine, and it’s only been with me for a few weeks, but that offset is really bothering me. Let me know if anyone has seen a fix! Thanks!

Other troubleshooting things I have done:

  • Ensure machine isn’t moving on table
  • I don’t think the wood is moving on the table
  • this still happens with changing settings for speed higher and lower

I would check laser and make sure nothing is loose on the laser itself.

Thanks for you response!

What things should I check on the laser that could be look? I made sure that the focus main screw (z-axis) was appropriately tight. Are there other things to check inside that?

If nothing is loose on head I would get out my allen wrench and tighten any coupler and/or motor to drive pully screws.

Alright. Just got back from tightening all the screws. There were a few that needed a slight turn, but they were mainly tight.

Is it possible that I have a software rather than hardware issue?

This is significant. Have you tested the machine since then?

Thanks for the help, Mikey! Hopefully that will solve the issue! I have a sinking feeling that It may not solve everything.

Any idea on why it would be centered in the middle of the work area and not on the outside?

I am in the process of taking off the 10W and putting on the 20W laser. I am going to go through and nitpick every single screw I can find, then try out some more cuts later tonight. I’ll throw up some pictures soon!

My S30 when new would make perfect squares. A circle in the front left area showed an offset when closing the loop. in the rear right area, the circle looked perfect! It looked like a Yaxis issue, but I found the Xaxis coupling was slightly loose.

To answer your question, “No idea why!!!”

The optical shaft, which I think is the Y-axis bar, has a slight bend. Could that be the culprit?

Ok, 20W laser is installed, and I went through and tightened every screw. I checked that the machine was square with some precision squares.

I am still getting problems with the machine. It won’t draw a perfect circle.

Is my problem possibly the optical shaft being slightly bent?

Crazy thing is that the top left and the bottom right circles are actually perfectly drawn. . . dunno what that means. . .

This is most likely from backlash in the mechanism. Do a full mechanical review but pay particular attention to making sure the pulley on the X-stepper motor is properly secured. It’s likely that the pulley is not rigidly secured with the grub screw.

Berain,

Thank you for your help! I have continued to troubleshoot the issue, and have not been able to find the issue, so I hope that your answer of backlash is correct! I will try to resecure the pulley with its screw!

As I have done more troubleshooting I have learned a few more things.

  • The offset is different in different parts of the working area
  • these differences are replicable (ex. Top left of the working area always has the most difference, but middle of working area is closest to correct alignment)
  • my machine is not drawing correct circles
  • it’s not a software issue (tried it in XTOOL create)
  • calibrating the axis did not solve the problem

Do these support backlash?

This is not going to be a configuration or software issue. It’s almost certainly a mechanical issue. Focus there.

Check belt tension and pulleys but every portion of the motion chain should be reviewed. Based on the circle test, however, it’s most likely to be the pulley.

got a similar problem on my Lasermaster 3 once.
It works perfect in one direction, as soon as the other direction comes to work it has a offset.
The fix was: the gear on the stepper motor wasn‘t fixed correctly on the shaft. There is a flat side on it, make sure that the screw in the gear is pointing to that instead of the round part of the shaft. makes a big difference!!

Thank you all so much for your time helping me!!

Both Berain and Reiner had the correct answer. I looked at the gear on the stepper motor and the grub screw was no longer securing the pulley to the motor shaft!!

I ended up putting some blue Loctite and voila! The results are perfect circles!

As you can see, here the fill is now inside the words!

Since doing that, I have done quite a few cuts. There is only one thing I have really noticed. It’s that the words I have picked out are sometimes slightly off. The picture I uploaded shows the letter D where the apex is slightly higher than is normal. (The font shows a symmetrical “D”)

Is this a related issue? Possibly the bent shaft? Or should I just be happy that I am back to a 95% solution and not nitpick tiny things like this?

Can you provide a matching screenshot of what exactly the text should look like?
