Lightburn not communicating all with Ortur LM2

Hi everyone,

I’m at a real loss here and despite me spending the last 3 hours following videos on youtube I can’t seem to figure out what’s happened.

I have an Ortur LM2 and have been testing Lightburn over the past few weeks on a trial license before committing to buying it. Up until today I have had no problems at all, but for some reason today, it will not work at all. It’s as if the laptop just doesn’t want to communicate with the laser. I have had error messages 5 & 9 which I have tried to follow video instructions through but to no avail. Could it be the licence just stopping any communication between the laptop and machine? I am on a 15 day extension according to my licence management page which I just clicked on today, so it just seems too much of a coincidence.

When I turn the machine it homes fine, but then thats it, I can’t frame anything, test fire the laser or jog the machine, it’s as if it’s dead. Also whilst working through the error 5 message, I have disabled home on startup but it still does it, as if the software isn’t communicating with the machine anymore. If I run a test in Laser GRBL though everything works fine, which is why I’m convinced there is something with the software and my 15 day trial extension. Would an expired licence trial cause this? Just want to make sure before I commit to buying it if it’s not going to work.

Thanks

No.

Error 5 is a settings issue and Error 9 is an operations (you) issue. Until you get these cleared up, you won’t get the message that tells you why it “won’t run”.

Accurate observation. I sounds like you have a USB communications issue. You are using USB and not WIFI, right?

This is because LaserGRBL talks to the controller in a different way. Lightburn is a high-speed streaming method, sending 100+ commands all at once. If anything goes wrong during that stream, you get an error. If you send a Home command ($H), that is just one command and the chance of interference is much lower.

Some machines will Home on power up and some will not Home until being told to, like Auto-Home on Startup and hitting the Home button. I do not think this is a problem.

We need some information to get started. Do this in the order listed, and please nothing else…

  1. Hook up the laser and power everything up.
  2. Open the Console window, right-click, and select Clear Window.
  3. Click on the Home button. Does it Home?
  4. Enter $$ into the Console input box.
  5. Enter $I next.
  6. Enter $# next.
  7. Enter ? next.
  8. Copy everything from the Console window and paste it in a Reply.
  9. Copy the X, Y, and Z positions from the Move window and paste in your Reply.

Click on the Reply button to send it.

Thanks for the reply. I can’t find a clear console button so I restarted and pasted the replies from the commands below:

I have no control whatsoever when I try and home, or jog the laser. It’s as if the machine isn’t turned on.

The machine is connected via USB. I did think it could be a connection issue so tried a few different ports but still nothing. It’s very strange because I’ve used it everyday this week without any issues. Haven’t changed any settings, but turned everything on today and nothing works.

That is because there is none.
" right-click, and select Clear Window"

You obviously do not have a communications problem. So now we work on positioning.

Home is not something you control. It either works or it does not.

Home appears to be working. Enter $RST=# in the Console and Home the machine again. Then report these same readouts.

So I’ve figured out what was happening and the reason there was no response. Rookie mistake!! Your comment about the USB connection was correct. For some reason when it opened up it was opening the machine on Com 3. I changed it to Com 4 and everything came to life. So it was a communication problem after all. Thanks very much for your assistance though. Much appreciated

Set $22=1 to enable Homing. If you have limit switches, you should be ready to go.

If it bangs into the frame, set $22 back to zero and turn off Auto-Home.

Rookie mistake? Even I make them! I guess we are never 100% Not A Rookie, right?

Thanks for the advice :+1:
