Just had 15 microbats fly out of my roof. I think I better make a box for them and close the roof up.
For all of you who may be thinking about buying or building a bat house. Place it as far away from your home as possible. They will still like the eaves of your home better than the house you provide. Get rid of bird baths, ponds, and any drinking water you may have positioned outside. They are extremely invasive. We have thousands and they have scored the windows of our log home with their urine and contaminated every spot you can think of with their toxic crap. Also degrade the stain on the logs. We have fought these miserable beasts for 30 years. Oh yes they are “PROTECTED”. Maybe ten years ago I was looking for something in the attic over our wood shop. I found piles of manure a foot high. We used all matter of lights to see where they could access. They have collapsing skeletons so they can access through a quarter inch space or slot. Believe me, I watched them enter and exit. Last year after they had found a way to actually enter the inside of our home we scoured the outside for something we may have missed. We found one space that had been chewed through the soffit on a dormer. We wracked our brain for something they may not be able to get through and thought one day of STEEL WOOL! Filled that hole and spread chinking over it. Still had them coming inside. When we built the house I intentionally left a cavity inside the roof cavity directly opposite the fireplace and chimney. Drilled holes in the wooden underside at the overhang and filled it with foam. We have been Bat Proof for a little over one year.
BTW: They still love the five gables our home has but the number is probably down to a few hundred. Spraying them with water at night when they have settled in helps but don’t get me started on how I wish every cotton picking Bat was dead. Oh I forgot, they eat mosquitos and we must not allow any bats to die.
