Looking for the Function to Start Milling at current position

I am searching for the function we have in Lightburn to start a job from the current position

Or an explanation on how to set up the CNC to start at that given position on my Vevor 4040 it feels like he hes randomly moving to diffrent places to start

You place a block of material on the table. Why do you need it to start somewhere different than where it does?

move tool to where you want with jog or type in corridenents click on table X0 YO,

do a few dry runs 1st, as it takes a bit of getting use to as it shifts work area and can run past axis if not careful

i have to when doing live edge slabs, as no square edges to work from and so manually jog to where I want it to start cutting from re zero X and Y

With a CNC things work differently. You size the workpiece (project) to match the wood you’ll use, and then zero the machine to one of the corners (or center) of the material, or somewhere within it.

CNC’s generally have work-holding (clamps or other attachments) that can be in the way, so it’s less “jog and run” than laser work.

That is the question my maschine some how always starts at some position on the maschine.

So for example if i place a150x150mm block in my design it will travel to the low right corner and into the limit switches

okay got it.

so i will use my 150 x 150mm piece use one corner as the “reference home” an zero X & Y.

But if i do that the maschine still tries to move across the full maschienes working area for some reason

Upload the .mage file that does this. Also enter $$ in the Console window and copy-paste everything after the $$ in the display window.

Home = A machine position, set with limit switches, and cannot be moved. Automatically sets Origin to 0,0 position.
Origin = A software 0,0 position that can be anywhere. Requires a good understanding of machine limits and coordinate systems.

I did a live edge round board. I moved to the center of the part, then moved the design to center on that location. It was real easy to see if it was going out of bounds. Without the Teardrop tool like in Lightburn, I just used the location boxes to have something to work with.

I do a similar thing on little pieces , usual i put wood under laser camera , manually draw out line of wood ,move design in position and save file, than transfer to MM, frame wood with O frame and move wood to match frame

most of my slabs are knocking on 3 meters long , and designs are all in random places ,going out of bounds isnt really my issue , id luv to be able to put my big slabs under a camera and do the same like LB :slight_smile:

its things like making sure letters etc don’t run through a knot hole or the middle of a picture running through a dark patch of wood and picture disappears which just ruins the whole project. turning it to fire wood

having the tear drop would mean i can zoom in on my design and pin an exact point , eg edge of a letter of design and moving tool to that exact point on my material and if need be shuffle part of the design to miss said knot

can be done with jog but is very time consuming and not as accurate as using the pin tool

May seem bit over the top, wanting to be so accurate. but I’m really fussy in how the final product comes out for my customers

If you are not fussy, you will not have customers very long.

i have a vevor 4040

when i home the maschine it goes to the limit switches thats fine

but when i frame the workpiece i have a large offset even thou the work should start in the center of the maschine. The Framing looks good at first glance but once i start the maschine it crashed into the Limit switches here is the console:

Did you mess with your machine GRBL settings?
As a start change GRBL $130 $131 and $132 per your machine work area (volume).

not realy i read it from the maschine controller and it just said that the working area was lager then in my project

I think you have a corrdinates issue. Please answer these questions so we can better offer advice.

  1. Where does the spindle go when you Home the machine?
  2. Please describe how you locate your part and set up Lightburn. Please be explicit.
  3. Am I safe assuming this is a traveling table in the Yaxis?

You have a 2020 (200mm x 200mm) machine. But remember, you set up the work area initially with the raw material part size.

If I say anything you already know, that is only because I do not know you know. :grin:

i found my mistake.

I did not proper zero x and y this lead to the wrong alignement of movement.
