Mac OSX, Dark Theme, Dark Background, Difficult to see drawings

Hello I need some help please. I am diabetic and have Glaucoma which means its difficult for me to either focus or see things normally.

I can not use the Light Theme at all in MAC OSX 15.6.1 (24G90)

So I use the Dark theme and find that the work area is still blinding white and everything else is black which is fine apart from the white work area.

I then set the display settings to use dark background and then start to draw and then find I can not see what I have drawn! See image please.

Is there any way please to set the default drawing tool line colour from black to another colour because I am finding it incredibly difficult to see what I am doing with these default settings.

For me personally I can no longer use Lightburn like this with my glaucoma. I would imagine for a normally sighted person it is difficult enough but for me its dreadful to be honest.

Perhaps there is a setting to change this that I have not understood or cannot find but for me at the moment it is impossible to work like this. I really would appreciate anybody that can shed some light on this either from the membership or from the LightBurn team to definitively advise me whether it’s possible to change this colour because I cannot work.

The white background is impossible for me. It’s far too bright and turning down the screen. It makes no difference. It’s still too light. Glaucoma is a terrible sight problem, it is treatable and I’m in the early stages of treatment but I cannot see it getting better for the next year or so, apparently my doctor tells me and as I use LightBurn most days I am finding more and more difficult to do.

Hopefully someone has some knowledge on this .

Thank you very much

I see what you’re saying. Thank you for reporting this and again for reaching out. I agree, the contrast seems low when drawing and I don’t see a mechanism for adjustment.

I have escalated your concerns and shared this post into our internal Dev Team channel. I’m looking forward to hearing back from them.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible .

I have some instructions from the dev team on how to assist. There is a way to edit a file in the computer and change the default colours. It’s not generally available but I’d be happy to experiment with this.

However, if you’re doing most of your work on just a few of the layers, you can clone the Layer settings from the C00 (Black) layer to a layer with a higher contrast colour assigned to it. This may be easier than editing the json file.

If changing the layer from C00 to another layer isn’t enough, I’ll walk you through the edit.

I’d like to know if the following will work for you.

forum 180701-3 test other layer colors.lbrn2 (74.5 KB)

Here, I’m drawing on the C02 Layer that is assigned a red colour. You can select any part of your drawing then click any of the coloured squares along the bottom row to reassign your selection to that Layer.

In the Cuts / Layers window you can cache the settings from Layer 00 into memory (with a single button) and then apply them to another layer with another button press in the Cuts / Layers window.

Hi John, thanks very much for the workaround and I’m sorry for the delay in replying. I was rushed into hospital with a severe infection in my leg just over a week ago and I’m still here but minus the infection we hope.

I have had a look at the first option and yes, it does work albeit with tinkering a little bit it is possible.

I would like to see what is involved in altering the Json file for a more permanent fix if that is possible please . I’m quite happy to alter that and then not worry about changing things in LightBurn itself.

Would you be able to let me have a look at that please.?

I assume that this will be listed as a bug that needs fixing and it will be looked at in the longer term as a problem that needs fixing. I’ve noticed it in other programs and it’s quite irritating. I have to admit not every program seems to work well with dark theme.

Thank you for what you’ve done so far and I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Neil

John I have just prepared a simple file showing the colours from thepallete on the dark background and there is only a few that really are of any use to be honest, its the background that is the problem for sure…I think if we can alter that problem solved.

Thanks. Neil Scott

I see what you mean. The ‘Value’ of the background doesn’t offer much contrast compared to the ‘Value’ of the colors in the color palette. My mom’s an artist so I get lectures on color theory (contrast, value, warm vs cool, etc.) from time to time.

For your eyes, do you feel that darkening the work area would be more effective than widening the line width?

I’m unsure if either of these are readily accessable or ‘easy’ to adjust but I can certainly bring it to the Dev team.

We’ve also got some folks in looking at the UI for accessibility issues. You’re not the only one struggling. We’re making a push to make LightBurn more accessible for everyone.
