Material Size Settings

I am literally brand new to the laser engraving hobby/arena and I have very little knowledge on how to set it up to engrave on different materials. While I have been doing a ton of research, I have one inescapable question:

If I am engraving on a 5x7 piece of wood, how do I tell the laser that it is a 5x7? If this does not make sense, let me know and I will try to explain it further.

The laser does not care what size the wood is. You can set the laser on a 4’x8’ sheet of plywood and etch (burn) that.

You can set a 5"x7" tool layer in Lightburn, only to help you design within those 5"x7" boundaries. Then you know you will only burn the wood piece…

Check out this video, it shows the different ways to start and how to enable the fire laser button along with framing.

Hope this helps.

This video makes sense and appears to address the issues I am having. When I get home later today, I am going to try this. Thank you for the video

It was already mentioned but using the tool layers can be really helpful. If you create a rectangle the size of your material and put it on the tool layer it will help you visualize how things are going to be laid out.

Of course you will still need to run framing to ensure things are properly aligned before sending the job.

Hey your video helped tremendously. I have book marked it so I can refer back to it as I get the hang of how this all works. Thank you so much.
