I would like to merge photo’s. The background would be a sunset and the second layer would be words. Do I need to type the words on ? or Engrave the background first then run it a second time with the words?

Just use different layers in LightBurn. Make sure the image layer runs first, then the Word layer.

It depends on what you want to do - if you want the words to be excluded from the engraving of the photo you would need to use an external program to add the text to the image, then import the composited result into LightBurn.
If you import two images, one of the background and one of the text, LightBurn will engrave them in sequence, not composite them together for you.
