Lets say I am cutting out a square from 3mm plywood.
My 40 watt laser takes 3 passes to cut it nice and clean to where it just falls out.
My question is about the multi-pass setting.
When it is set to 1 the laser makes a nice smooth cut pass all around the square.
If I choose 3 passes it cuts the sides in a random order making 3 cuts and then moves to another side and makes 3 passes.
Why dont it make a complete pass around the square before starting the next pass like it does when only 1 pass is selected.
Your “square” is likely not a true closed square. It’s likely a series of 4 individual lines aligned to approximate a square.
Try connect the lines together to make a true 4 sided closed shape. You can do this if they’re properly aligned by selecting all the individual lines at the same time and doing Edit->Auto-join selected shapes.
I have used max zoom in to insure the line ends were touching each other.
Even used snap to option.
I then selected all 4 lines and chose the Edit>Auto-Join option.
Optimize cut path option is on also.
Does not seem to make any difference.

The easiest way I have found to make sure shapes are closed is to go into node editor. Click a line of the box, if the whole box doesn’t go dashed then your corners are not connected in light burns mind.
To fix this, while in mode editing, grab a corner node and move it away from the other line then move it back to fully connect it. The next line should turn dashed too. Then work your way around line segment to segment.
It’s annoying but it works.
I every now and then I have this problems when importing dxf from fusion360. I have alot of problems with file sellers on Etsy being lazy and having dirty files.
You may want to consider trying a longer lens. Going from 50mm to 75mm made a difference. I found multiple passes just messes up the side of the wood.
