New Laser. Advice please

I only started 3 months ago and was ready to give up after a week, but, encouraged by people on here I persevered and glad I did. I should mention maybe that I am 85 yrs young and not quite as quick in learning maybe as I used to be. The machine I purchased was Your laser: 4240 Laser Engraving Machine
Your controller/ firmware: GRBL
Your computer: Dell OptiPlex 7080 SFF running windows 10
Which I now realise is only a 5 watt, I would like to change that now for a 10 watt ATOMSTACK A10 Pro Laser Engraving Machine 50W Offline Engraving CNC Laser Cutting Machine 10W Laser Module DIY Engraver for Wood Metal Glass Ceramics 410 x 400mm
The only thing is it lists several files but does not actually say whether SVG files are suitable, which are the majority of files I am using. Can anyone confirm that they are compatible with this Atomstack and is this a decent machine for the price range. (It’s all I can afford) Thank you for any advice you can give an old man

Yes, I’ve had several Atomstack machines and have loved them all. Its not the Atomstack machine but the Lightburn software that allows import of svg files. As well as trace on jpg files. And all Atomstack machines support Lightburn. I believe that the free LaserGRBL software also supports import of SVG files if you are using that. Atomstack also has their own free software called Atomstack Studio that you can download.

From Atomstack Web Site:
The metal laser engraver can be connected via Type-C and USB cables. In addition to Atomstack’s self-developed app and PC software, it can also be connected via Lightburn, LaserGRBL, and other software for configuration and control

You lost me here… If these are machines you’re thinking of, it’s nice to post them with a link so we can go look at them. You can highlight the text, then click on the link in the toolbar to assign a link to that text.

If you wish to engrave and mark metals a fiber is about your only choice. Most of the visible light lasers are generally not up to the task of marking metals. You can use coatings to help or bind to the metal for marking but engraving could be a stretch.

Check if the machine is supported by Lightburn, then your SVG files will probably not be an issue.

Thank You very much

I know your on a budget. But maybe save your pennies and wait till you can upgrade to the Atomstack A30 Pro. You will be much happier with this machine. Start a Go Fund Me page and let all your friends know. I’ll be happy to contribute. Or maybe get a few $$ for your existing machine to someone who wants to test out laser engraving without a huge investment. Check with your significant other, maybe he/she has some money stashed away.
