Newbie Here with a Linux Question

Hey All,
Thanks for having me, I just received my JTech 4.2W laser and have it hooked up to my 1000mm XCarve…
Just trying to get Lightburn setup on my dumb Linux laptop (lack of options) and it can not find my laser… just says waiting to connect…

I have added my laser 2-3 times now and rebooted everything multiple times…

I know absolutely nothing about Linux and Was lucky to get Lightburn Installed properly!

USB port works fine with Easel for CNC carving!!!

And Help would be Great, but dumb it down for me.

Thanks

In particular, check that your user or LightBurn is in the ‘dialog group’ so it can access USB devices.

Thanks Oz…
trying it out now I’ll keep you posted!

Worked Great thanks Oz…

Hi Oz.

How does one check the dialout group?

Thanks.

@Eric, Did you look at this?

  1. Open a terminal and run the following command:

  2. sudo adduser $USER dialout && sudo adduser $USER tty

Hi Rick.

Yes I have done that. The reply I get is the ‘dialout’ group already exists. I was looking for a way to look at the group to see what is actually in there.

LightBurn is working well in Linux on my new ChromeBook. Just trying to sort out the USB connection part. I’ve been running it successfully for some time now on Ubuntu on an older machine which is a little long in the tooth now.

Thanks. Eric.

Can you run the following commands and give us the output for both?

groups
uname -a

@Eric - ok, so the problem is on a ChromeBook? From a previous message you said that it was working.

Your user is in the dialout group so LightBurn should be able to see your machine.
With your machine connected try running ls -al /dev/tty* at the console and send me the list of devices you have connected.

However, we don’t really support ChromeBooks. Yes, it’s technically linux but it’s missing a lot of things that a “real” linux distro would have so I’m very doubtful we will be successful. Officially we support Ubuntu 16.04+ and Fedora 28+ and anything outside those is very much Your Mileage May Vary because of the drastic differences from distro to distro.

Let me know what the ls command returns - maybe it’s possible to just manually create your profile.

Hi Adam,

I appreciate the time you all take to assist. Yes I did say I had LightBurn working on the ChromeBook. It is installed under Linux and runs really well! I can design and save files, but I cannot connect the the cutter. (TopWisdom)

That said, I have LightBurn running well on an ageing laptop running Kubuntu 18.04. I can remote access it from any computer in the place using Chrome Remote Desktop. (I did have a problem there, but sorted that.)

From my other 2 ChromeBooks, one old and the other new, I can remote to the Linux machine successfully and operate LightBurn without problem.

I was interested in running directly from the new CB as the Linux machine is ageing. The one real problem it has I can work around, but in time it may have to be replaced.

In summary, I guess if I can’t connect the new CB and run LB direct to the laser cutter, I do have options. It would be nice if this connection issue would be resolved, but I guess not urgent.

Screen shot attached. I sent that command several times. First with the machine running. Second and third after reconnecting either end of the USB lead. Finally I restared the laser cutter with the USB connected. All appear to be the same result. Sorry, I’m not sure what it means.

USB keys plugged in can be accessed by Chrome or Linux no problem.

Thanks again.

Yeah - it’s not seeing any serial devices. That’s your problem. Regardless of permissions, the device is not showing up.
Try this.

  • unplug the machine USB connection
  • wait ~30 seconds
  • plug the USB connection back in
  • run dmesg at the console and send me the results

Is this what you were looking for? Coming in 2 parts…

Sorry - I meant to have you do dmesg | tail -n 30
But even still it doesn’t look like it’s seeing the device at all. Are you 100% sure that you reconnected your machine’s controller right before running that command?

Hi Adam. I normally run the cutter from my old Ubuntu machine. Apart from ageing, this works fine.

I take the USB cable from the Ubuntu machine and plug it into the ChromeBook/Linux machine. So I believe it is a working connection. I did read in the forum of one other chap who got it working on CB, but as you say, so many machine variables…

dmesg | tail -n 30 gave the following.

Thanks again for all you guys do.

Eric.

Yeah - there’s absolutely nothing there that indicates it’s even seeing a new USB device. So much so that I wonder if your USB ports are even working to be honest.
also - not all chromebooks are the same so no telling what’s different.

Yes, it’s interesting. The USB ports recognise and work seamlessly with the wireless mouse, USB keys etc. It just seems the Linux side can’t see the ports.

I appreciate your efforts with this. LightBurn works beautifully on the CB otherwise. I can design things and save them.
Using LightBurn on the Ubuntu machine via Chrome Remote Desktop in the office CB is probably easier. Work is saved to the remote Ubuntu laptop. When I go to the workshop then I just open the file there, send it to the cutter and go.

Perhaps that will suffice. One-day I’ll update the Ubuntu machine.

Cheers.

Eric.
