Newbie lost his way

Hello my name is Rikk. I am trying to figure out what I may have done wrong but my new laser will not stop crashing. I have an Ortur LM2 with an 10 watt and an extension kit. I set my last laser up well enough but I made the work area slightly smaller to keep it from hitting the frame but the new laser will stay tight to the frame and not move towards the project. I am sorry to ask for help but I have spent alot of time here on this forum trying to resolve this, if anyone can help I would truly appreciate it!

Need some more info to help. Does this machine have limit switches? If so, does it home correctly?
Please post a screenshot of your entire Lightburn screen with your project loaded and the Cuts/Layers Panel and Laser Panel visible. Also post a screenshot of the Settings Window (Gears icon) with the Units and Grids tab visible and post a screenshot of the Device Settings Window (Wrench and Screwdriver icon).

First thanks for taking the time! Yes it has limit switches. It does not home as well as I would expect, it will grind in the home position most times for 3-4 seconds. It has also fallen short of home several times causing me to hit home more than once. When homing I noticed it traveling slow at first then picking up speed. I will include screenshots.
Thanks Again!

That tells me there’s a problem with your limit switches, either not adjusted properly, faulty, or a. wiring issue. You need to get that working before moving forward.

In the move window click get position after homing. It should read x=0 y=0. The axis whose coordinates are off, is the one with the faulty switch.

I homed the laser it shows 0,0? After doing so I changed the USB again and it grinded in the home position for atleast 6-7 seconds. I will swap the limit switches from my other laser right now to see if it changes

After changing the limit switches, it comes off the frame and heads towards the project unfortunately when it tries to frame the project it shutters and I get error 9

You say it stutters, like the stepper motor is juttering on one or both of the axes? That’s probably what’s setting the motion alarm. That’s above my pay grade. There are others on here that are more versed in those things.

I could be wrong but it seems to slow down to frame the project and the deceleration causes it to halt to a stop maybe too fast? Tim I really really appreciate your time!! Thank you it may not be working right but it has not come off the frame in 2 days! Your awesome for taking the time!

You can try a new firmware (191).
Also check for slope, maybe loose wheels?

Or the laser head is hitting the frame before it hits the switches.

My Z axis adjuster has a range where the focus β€œstick” hits the frame before the switches are activated. He probably needs to adjust the position of the limit switches so they activate properly.

Don’t let the Machine grind against the frame, it’s bad for your gears and really hard on the motors.

I checked this also and the laser head leg does not contact the frame. It is properly engaging the switch but continuing to try to grind towards home without contacting the handle for the leg

I will try this to see if it helps.

  • try to move the head in the middle before starting
  • then start and activate the switches manually (before the head is hit the frame)

see if the limit switches are responding

I tried this now the laser will not even try to move and I get error 9.

I manually moved the laser to the middle and sent it home it appears both limit switches are working. I have noticed if I move it manually then send it home it seems to functions properly finding home. When I turn the laser on it will grind in the home position for 3-5 seconds?

I don’t have a solution per se, but bear in mind that when you do this, you are not shrinking your workspace toward the center, but toward your home position. This only moves you away from two borders, and has retained the position of the other two.

Home Cycle:

  1. The laser rapids towards the switches.
  2. Laser hits the switch and stops.
  3. Laser reverses direction and pulls of the switch until it opens.
  4. The laser reverses again and slowly travels back on the switch until the switch closes.
  5. It then reverses one last time to very accurately find the point where the switch opens.
  6. Once the the switch opens, it stops and the controller calls that the Home Position.
  7. Not all controllers show 0,0, but it typically close if the GRBL parameters are correctly set.

This is the Home position, which is a machine position, there is also something different called Origin, which is a program position. They are not the same thing, but can have the same numbers.
