Newbie question on selecting areas to separate into layers

Please help, I am trying to get this dfx file to separate so I can define different burning patterns in the various areas. When I grab the star, things work perfectly. When I try and grab the upper or lower right section, LB only grabs the horizontal line. When I try and delineate the left portion, LB only will grab the star. What am I missing. BTW file is DFX sourced from fusion 360 where each area is completely constrained.
TIA Kimbal

Hi Kimbal - welcome to the forum! Could you attach your .lbrn2 save file so we can take a look?

I suspect that your lines all imported as separate lines, and you’ll need to do some grouping to make them behave as you would expect.

I apologize, I did take a screenshot and planned on attaching but got caught up in the verbiage.

I looked at the file, your shapes are not closed …

Thank you. I went carefully over the border and closed. All lines are solid black. Still same situation, when selecting upper right portion it snaps to the horizontal line instead of my selection. I have done this before, but cannot seem to get past this this time.
Thanks

And here is the file … i found another open spot at 2 o’clock

I didn’t fill the left area, so you can still see the star

Thank you so much. Watching your video also helped me lean some things!

Hi, instead of Edit Nodes you can try the Trim Shapes Tool, when you touch the shape with the tool a segment highlights Red at the ends of the red segment is where is the trouble, sometimes just a left-click cut the garbage and auto-join the segments (not documented trick).
