Newbie trying to add a thunder laser to a recently purchased version of LB

I am with a maker space, and just took the Thunder 100w laser safety class. I purchased LB and can’t get past the interface of adding a device. I can’t find the Thunder in the devices window. Am I missing something. I have been doing research, but do I load the software for the controller? Do I download a driver from the Thunder website? We don’t have direct contact to the Thunder laser. It is attached to a computer in the maker space and files have to be physically transferred to LB. Is that another reason I can’t find it. I watched the opening video in the support pages, but it didn’t seem to solve my problem.

Cheers.

On the last screen of the LightBurn install, there is a checkbox to install the “FTDI Driver” This is the driver required to do USB to a Ruida controller like is in your Thunder Laser. Simply re-run the installer for LightBurn and check that box to install the proper driver then you should be able to see your laser. You do have to be plugged directly into the Laser via USB in order for LightBurn to find the laser with the add devices wizard.

I am not getting that screen. I have a mac M1 Mini and a 2013 Mac book Pro. The only screen I get when I download the software is the Devices dialogue box wanting me to enter a laser. I am trying to take a screenshot, but Big Sur OSx isn’t doing it. Am I doing the install wrong. I am downloading, dragging to the applications folders and opening the application.

FTDI driver installation option is only available on Windows I believe.

Can you confirm that you have a license for DSP?

Also, how are you connecting to the laser? If using USB note that newer versions of MacOS include FTDI drivers. Older versions may not. There are known issues with FTDI drivers in general for Mac and connecting to Ruida controllers on USB although those issues are not universal.

What happens when you attempt to take a screenshot?

Sure, our maker space had a code to get a discount on the software. I bought it and have the receipt. I deleted that LB, re-downloaded and it did the same thing. I may have preference still in my Mac Book. We can’t connect the the laser. The decided to put it on a computer that is wifi at the maker space, but you have to transfer files over via usb or logging into a cloud. Probably for safety so no one can run the machine remotely. Apparently there are people with macs that are using the Thunder. I may have to ask them if this isn’t something that can’t be solved here. Any other thoughts would be appreciated in case they don’t have an answer.

oops, I did find my screenshot.

Can you go to System Report->Hardware->USB and check to see whether or not the laser is being detected?

Also, can you run this in Terminal?

ls /dev/*usb*

And to confirm, the laser is currently connected to the Mac Mini or the 2013 Macbook Pro? What OS is running on each machine?

My makerspace ent this out to me. This got me going and allowed me to get the program up and running soI can start to learn it. Use this for Thunder reference. [https://support.thunderlaserusa.com/portal/en/kb/articles/lightburn-trial-mock-nova-setup]

It didn’t occur to me that you were not connected to the laser and looking to simply setup a placeholder device. That clarifies things.

Glad you’re able to move forward.
