Hello, I have a 5.5kw Algolaser brand laser. I received it on Wednesday. I was able to cut 2.5mm plywood, but there is no way to cut 3mm MDF.

5.5 kilowatts? I think you meant 5.5w instead.

The MDF is both thicker and more dense than the plywood. This means you will need more power to cut through it. Besides controlling the laser % of power, you can slow down the feed rate and/or increase the number of passes. Your laser should be capable of cutting through 3mm MDF with the right settings.

Hi Mikey, thanks for your reply. In theory I have set the parameters indicated by the manufacturer and I have configured the lightburn. Correct, the MDF is denser and I managed to cut some pieces but now I can’t cut them. I was able to cut at a speed of 400 at 80% and 5 passes and today even with 7 passes it didn’t cut it…

There is more variability in materials than people realize. One variable often forgotten is humidity. New Baltic Birch plywood sheets I can cut in 3 passes 10w, 700mm/m, 70%. A month later, the wood from the same stack needs 5 passes at 80% for reliable cut through. I always keep air assist on as well.

For a while, I too thought the problem was my machine or the software. Now I just make adjustments and keep working. The variability is what keeps lasering interesting.

Yes, but I recommend Isopropyl alcohol and no other type.
