Nodes editing or moving

How do you move nodes around to create or alter shape. When i click on node i get irratic movement with no control

You are probably editing the nodes zoomed in a lot, but have your grid snap set to the default 1mm. Hold Ctrl when moving to bypass the grid snapping, or set grid snap to 0 in the settings, and see if that helps.
