Ortur 10W vs 5.5W laser head

I have an Ortur 5.5W head and quite recently I bought also the 10W laser head, but I’m having this kind of problem with it.
When I use the 5.5W to engrave ceramic tiles with the Norton method, blacks are much blacker than with the 10W head, even using it at 100% power. Most of the images engraved with the 10W head, whatever power or speed I use, are greyish. I made the comparison on the same tile, so it’s not matter of paint. Instead, I get good with wood . Do you have an idea of what happens? Thanks for your help

A different laser, different speeds/feeds…

It’s almost 2x the power… did you set your pwm to 1/2 of the 5.5W laser pwm?

Many times - more power isn’t the answer.

:smile_cat:

Yes, of course. I started with half the power, but results were very poor. Then I gradually increased the power up to 100%, basically almost twice the 5.5 power, but no way. Results were worse than the 5.5.
I’m just wondering if this is not related to the different spot size. The ten watts has a finer spot. I will try to change the line/inch and let you know. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

I use a OLM3 (10W beam) and have nice rich blacks at 1o mm/s 30% power. Fairly wide range of parameters works well FWIW.

Thanks for your replies, and sorry for answering so late. I was out for a small vacation without PC and laser. I will keep on making tests, but I suspect that yes, more power doesn’t necessarily mean more black.

Hi
I’m considering the Ortur LM3 for 4" tile work and some metal & photo engraving “wanting to gradually learn to reproduce some of the excellent results we see here on LBforum”, and also a bit of click together box’s etc.
The 20w has the spot dim’s 0.08x0.08 and although bigger than the 10w spot, the 20w is more uniform.

Would the uniformity be an advantage considering line spacing DPI etc?

I thought a 5w would be best but it doesnt seem to be an option!

I’ve also been looking at Sculpfun but cant work through all the options…good, better, Best.

The working area of the Ortur isnt huge but stability I think is key and may consider upgrades for steppers etc…when a bit more experienced.

I also want to do large work and am considering the Tyvok S1.
I’m doing all this with the intention of making a wee bit of money at the craft markets etc and personalised contract engraving…so I think the quality should be high.

Any opinions welcome!
