Ortur Laser Master 2 is Engraving Inaccurately & 'flattening' Shapes

Hello! I’m new to both this forum and laser engraving, so I appreciate any advice!

I recently set up an Ortur Laser Master 2-S2 (LU2-4-SF) and have been experiencing inaccuracies when I try to engrave and cut shapes. I’ve checked and tightened the screws, tightened the y-axis timing belts, and all the wires seem to be connected tightly.

On the test grid that I made (please see attached pictures) (and I’ll be more careful about burning stuff in the future lol) you can see how the squares ended up as ‘squished’ rectangles, and the grid rows are uneven.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you!

Check your pinion gears. I suspect one of them is not properly secured and is moving back and forth on the stepper shaft during direction changes.

If not that, look for any other mechanical opportunity for backlash.
