While I think I have it worked out now I am still not sure what I did that worked.
retried with something extremely simple, just two 1cm wide lines next to each other on some completely transparent glass, thats notably thicker then the mirror panes I was using.
It line up perfectly so I am at this point guessing thatsome part of my jig/fence edge is uneven.
So …thanks for the help and the conversation, I just wish I could clearly state that " X solved my problem" >_>
That leaves me half satisfied but glad you have a workaround.
One thought based on your new discovery. Is it possible that your laser head is not aimed straight down? Or the bed of the laser is not trammed or square with the laser head? Perhaps it’s at a slight angle which is why material thickness affects the point that is getting engraved?
Just a thought.
honestly, at this point I am afraid of messing to much with it to check in case I screw something up.
