Oversan not working with Longer Ray 5 10W

I have a Longer Ray 5 10W and overscan has never worked. Burned edges every time. Am I missing a setting in Lightburn somewhere?

To confirm, you are enabling overscan in the Cut setting?

Also, if you’re getting burned edges that implies that you’re not getting variable power from the controller.

2 additional things to check:

  1. You’re not using Constant Power Mode in cut setting
  2. You’re using the correct device type for the laser. Push Devices button in Laser window, then click once on the name of your laser. Does it list “GRBL” there? Make sure it’s not “GRBL-M3” or anything else. If it’s not GRBL, then edit the device and change the device type.

I’m at work right now and can’t look it up. It is GRBL though. I’ve noticed some people suggesting that $32 in GRBL should be $32=1 instead of $32=0.

That is also true but should not affect overscan.

I would be surprised if your machine did not ship with $32 already set to 1.

I have set overscan up to 10% and it still doesn’t help. Engraves are always burned on the edges. I just add a line on each side of my project and cover the line with aluminum cards to keep the lines from showing up on the project.

Doesn’t help or is not working? Those are different things. Can you see the laser moving beyond the edge of the fill boundary? Do the overscan areas show in the Preview?

Can you upload a photo of what you’re seeing?

Also upload the .lbrn file that you’re testing with.

I suspect one of the two conditions I listed above may be in play for you so worth checking those when you get the opportunity.

Overscan does work and does show on the preview but still burns the edges severely. It happens on every project I have done. I will try your suggestions when I get home tonight.

You did not confirm you made the change. Even if this is not your issue, this turns off the laser during rapid moves. In a CNC mill, the spindle motor continues to run all the time while in motion.

Okay. This implies something else is going on. If you can report back after you check those other settings and can provide photos and a sample .lbrn file we can fully close the loop on what’s going on.

I have not made the change yet. I will when I get home this evening>

I will. Thank you.

It was not set to GRBL. It was GRBL-L3 or something like that. Changed it and everything works great now. Thanks so much for the help!
