Path mysteriously offset and mangled

I cut the file in the photo. A pretty basic SVG.
Somehow, just one of the paths got shifted up and mangled.
What’s going on here? Could this have something to do with the fact that the topmost red curve isn’t connected to the selected red curve (see image)?

You can also see from the acrylic, on the right some of the mangled section there’s an etch line connecting to the right-hand green curve. It’s not a crack.

The cut job didn’t end here. It continued and cut most of the other pieces perfectly, with one exception. The job completed omitted 2 rectangles from another area.

Is this a known issue with 1.6.03?
Has this bug been fixed before?

How does it look in the preview (alt+p) ?

The preview looks correct, including the missing 2 rectangles that I mentioned.
No issues with that.

Show us a screen shot (not a cel phone picture) of your cut setting and layers settings.

Do you have “cut selected objects” turned on? Your photo shows only the red dashed line will cut, the red solid and the green solid lines will not cut.

Optimization settings are at the defaults:

Do you have “cut selected objects” turned on?

No, it’s turned off (see screenshot). I only selected that line for this photo to highlight that it’s not connected to the red curve above it, in case that might be part of the problem.

My settings are as close to the defaults as they could be. I installed LB on this particular device yesterday. Imported the SVG, ungrouped some parts to remove unwanted text, rotated it to portrait to fit my material, adjusted the cut settings, hit “Send” and manually started it from the laser cutter.

Is it repeatable and does the file cut correctly in a different area of your gantry?

Is there an errant control point? Select everything (in a copy!) and delete it. Then try and select the whole area. Does a single point show up?

No errant points. Ungrouped everything, selected each path one by one and deleted. Select all found nothing remaining.

Good questions. I will test these and report back

If possible, share the file

You bet. Here it is.
It’s a slightly modified (text removed) version of this SVG:

pi3 case.lbrn2 (61.8 KB)

Seems like no, it’s not repeatable. I just tried cutting the exact same file that was downloaded to my laser from yesterday, without moving the origin (same cutting position) and it worked fine…
I might have some problem with the controller itself.
Well… I’ve been considering replacing it with a different controller, I guess this is another incentive to do that.

This ticket can be closed. This isn’t a LightBurn problem after all. Thanks for helping me investigate this, everyone :folded_hands::heart:

I suggest not ruling out a potential mechanical issue or a situation where you’re losing steps for some reason.

Yeah, it’s a good thought, but if I were losing steps then I don’t think it would be able to resume precisely after this shape messed up.
This screen recording here shows the preview section where it starts on this area, but it isn’t the beginning of the whole cut task.
It gets to this section, has a brain fart, then goes back to business as usual.
There’s also the part (not pictured) where it omits 2 entire rectangles. It’s a bit too specific to be mechanical.

Based on the Preview it doesn’t seem like a likely scenario to lose steps but it doesn’t rule it out. It may be losing steps during that first cut and then not again after that point, meaning all subsequent cuts are relatively aligned.

I’ve seen similar superficial symptoms on Ruida that occur with communication issues but the problem would persist in the stored file. Since you’re seeing differences in behavior with the stored file then either the controller, as you surmise, or something downstream.

Would be nice if you could reliably force it to occur.

I agree. I’d love to know how to reproduce this.
This was a simple cut, but I would hate for this to happen to a more complex, longer job.

In the past few days, before I got my current setup going properly, I saw some other weirdness but I chalked it up to my hacky approach.
I tried to use LightBurn to carve an image, and since I didn’t have it set up properly yet I exported an OUT file and used AutoLaser to upload it to the machine.
Instead of carving, the laser head just moved left and right on one spot indefinitely with the laser turned off, not making any progress in the controller’s preview screen.
I’m now wondering if that was another symptom of this same issue.

Need more data.
