Port failed to open - already in use? The old posts on this, didn't do me any good

I really hope someone will help me. I haven’t been able to use my laser (Sculptun S9) for over a year, because I couldn’ t get this com port to work. I eventually gave up after being frustraited so many times. Every time I ask for help, I’m told to “try uninstalling and re-installing” I’ve done that countless times. I’m lucky it’s even showing up however, now it’s saying Port failed to open - already in use? Please someone that knows a fix other than uninstalling and reinstalling PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

If I understand correctly, last month you were at this point:

Were you successful in updating the firmware?

USB communications in Windows tends to be unreliable, at best. The usual steps may be helpful at weeding out the easy gotchas:

FWIW, I just replaced a USB-A to USB-C keyboard cable that worked fine for a year and is now just slightly touch-sensitive, so things can fail with no warning.

Let us know what you’ve done and what happened, so we help you make some progress.

Which now means there is likely something else using that port.
Under device manager what ports are being listed?

I’m still at the point where it’s connected in GRBL but Lightburn still says “Port failed to open - already in use?” If you could log in to my computer and see if you know what the problem is, i would really appreciate it. I’ve wasted so much of my life for over a year trying to get this to work.

Thanks

Can you enter $$ in console and paste here?
Also a screenshot with laser window open.

Windows fiercely enforces the “one program per port” rule, so if you have used any other program to run the laser before starting LightBurn, then the port is already in use by that previous program. Some programs apparently do not release the USB port before they shut down, so the port can be “in use” even after you think it should be free.

Basically, the error message is telling you exactly what problem LightBurn encountered.

Have you tried starting LightBurn after you reboot the PC, without running any other program that connects to the laser?

Hard to help someone that does not follow up or attempts to try out suggestions.
