Problem engraving slides through masking tape

I am trying to start a new project with a 50W fiber laser. I engrave pistol slides to customize our guns. I want to masked the slides and engrave the tape and slides so that I can paint the the engraving and then remove the tape to add color to our guns.
I am having problems burning through the tape in some areas of the slide. I am using a 110mm lense. Any recommendations on masking tape type, or manufacturer and laser settings for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve had my fiber for a short time but I’ll make a suggestion…

Fiber frequency will not affect natural materials, so to speak… However the energy is going somewhere. I’m guessing that the beam is making it to the metal and the hot metal is burning your tape…

I think you’ll have to come up with something else to mask them off… Don’t know what that would be and still be useful.

There are a ton of videos out there about fiber lasers and engraving on guns. Some do color (in sunshine) on stainless steel…

There is a number of posts that I’ve seen here doing fiber gun engraving… I can’t seem to locate any of them… The search options are rather limited.

Feed one of these into your favorite search engine:

site:forum.lightburnsoftware.com gun fiber

site:forum.lightburnsoftware.com pistol engrave

Specifying the site eliminates chaff from elsewhere.

Google desperately pushes irrelevant ads, so a different search engine may be a better idea.

Tried that… still couldn’t find the thread I was hunting … :frowning:

I hope it wasn’t on the makers forum…

What many of us would like is a regular expression type of search. Along with options to search the posts within any/all threads…

Ain’t nobody knows regex (), but Kagi comes close with Booleans to combine terms like Google used to do:

site:forum.lightburnsoftware.com gun and fiber and engrave

Needs a free account to work, but it’s an option.
