Problems with framing since updating firmware with X-Tool D1 Pro 20W

I had been using my Xtool D1 pro 20 W without any issues, solely through Lightburn and had never used Creative Workspace until I needed to use my IR head and it would only align properly with Creative Workspace. Upon downloading and setting up workspace, I had to update my firmware. Since this, now Lightburn is not working properly.

I am having trouble with framing using my extension kit, won’t frame past the typical place it would without the extension kit (and yes, my device settings were set to my project size of 650mm in length X 350mm in width).

Also, when doing a normal size project that wouldn’t require the extension kit (400mmx400mm), when framing the laser, it is skipping in the lower right corner and then when returning to the upper left corner.

None of this has ever happened until now. When I tried to cut the file after the skipping incident in framing it ruined the project. I use 2 passes typically and it was off and was cutting some places way off and others just fine.

Appreciate any help I can get with this.

I believe you may need to expand the size of the laser in XCS for this to work.

The only option I see to do this in the upper right hand corner I can change from flat, cylindrical, or extension kit. I have done that but doesn’t seem to make any difference once in Lightburn, as this is changeable with each use, but I don’t use this system often so if I am missing something else, please advise.

Also, this wouldn’t affect framing problems with a normal size project…the laser is jumping during framing even in a normal size project that wouldn’t require the extension.

I just took a look at the extension kit. It seems to me that the long dimension should be on the Y-axis, not X. Can you confirm?

[EDIT] It occurred to me that I may be misinterpreting the X in your statement.

Here are two relevant setups for the extension. Have you applied both of these in the way shown?
Switch to “Laser extension kit” Mode in XCS – xTool
Set the Working Size for Extension Kit in LightBurn – xTool

Correct, my y axis would be my “length” and X axis “width” in this case

And I went through the links you sent and this is how I have done both. Like I mentioned, I had the extension prior to upgrading my firmware, I never had a problem until I updated the XCS firmware.

Odd indeed. It seems somehow that laser is not preserving or respecting the extended dimensions.

Perhaps try downgrading the firmware to see if behavior reverts.

Now that I am not sure how to do. I only see an option to upgrade. How would I downgrade the firmware.

In searching the Lightburn forum, I saw a similar issue - as far as the skipping during framing after upgrading the firmware but this was with a D1 and in that forum a update (for lack of better words - I can’t remember the wording actually used) was provided by Lightburn but it said it was for D1 only and not for the Pro. But I couldn’t find any similar subjects regarding the D1 Pro

Check out method 3 listed here. I’m not certain but I assume this will allow you to apply an older firmware. This may not be the case as some systems specificaly block downgrading.

How to Upgrade xTool D1 Pro Firmware? – xTool

The other component you will need to know is the firmware version that you previously had and find it on xtool site to download.

I appreciate your help, but unfortunately, I have no idea what prior version I had. I had never used XCS until this past weekend when I need to use my IR and I couldn’t figure out how to get Lightburn to line up properly.

That will make things more difficult.

A few questions:

  1. Are you able to use XCS without issue? Does the skipping issue exist there and are you able to use the full size of your bed?
  2. Are you having these issues only when using IR module or is this with the regular module?
  3. Can you describe what exactly happens during the skipping? Or take a video of this and link here?

Separately I’d suggest reaching out to xTool to see if they can provide some guidance on what’s going on.

I am actually running a file on XCS now to see if it works. I will say, it framed the proper full bed size but it did not frame correctly and did skip.

When this job completes, I will video and upload the issue in both XCS and Lightburn and send that…it may take me a while as I have an errand I have to run also. But I will upload the video as soon as I can.

Again, I am not as familiar with XCS. I had no problems with the IR, it was the first time I had used it. This is happening when I switched back to the regular laser head and went back to Lightburn to do another project. I have a big job ahead and just don’t want to mess it up and feel so awkward with XCS so I really want to figure out this Lightburn issue…that’s my comfort zone.

Is it possible that things have gotten loose on the machine between wear and tear and swapping laser modules? Do a full mechanical review of your machine. In particular, make sure that belts are properly tensioned and that the pinion gears are properly secured to the stepper motor shafts.

We went back over all equipment and tightened everything and that seemed to fix the issue. I’m not sure how that kept it from framing the full length in Lightburn and not in XCS but it is working now…makes sense to me in regards to the skipping but not the full length framing…but I digress and just thankful that issue is fixed. Thank you for your help!

Fantastic outcome. I’m with you that skipping could be resolved with the tune-up but surprised about the full travel. Perhaps due to your testing in XCS?

In any case, glad you’re up and running.
