How would you go about using a VBit to pocket out a letter only in the confines of the letter shape or to cut out a star shape so the points of the star are narrower and shallower than the middle.

That is probably not possible at this time. I think that would be a v-carve procedure which millmage is not capable of yet.

Correct - V-Carve is not yet available. But it’s in the works.
He used brute force for that if I’m not mistaken, which would make it very, very slow for anything but simple shapes (this can be seen in the video - it takes about 7 seconds to compute the V-carve path for the text “V-Carve”). It’s also GPL, which means if I even read his code for reference we’d have to open source LightBurn, which isn’t going to happen. The guy writing ours taught computer science, so they likely have a similar skill set.
InkScape uses an open source tool, called AutoTrace…

It seems the issue might be due to the cutter having too large a diameter and a wide angle.
Try switching to a smaller diameter cutter with a more acute angle—here’s a sample using those adjustments.

You could still use that 90º V-bit—just be sure to set a shallower depth of cut.
I’ve included a few screenshots to help illustrate the point.

This is basically the same result. I was hoping for a V-carve result which they said is not a Millmage function…yet.

Thanks. This answers the question I was about to post as I experienced similar results. Is there a timeline on the v-carve function?

As soon as possible. The mathematical algorithm (specifically the medial axis problem ) is a big ball of wax.

This has been solved many times. Can’t code just be purchased?

There are certainly instances where yes, purchasing access to code for something is fine (we do this for the Trace tool, for instance) - but this isn’t one of those times, as far as I’m aware. That’s a decision made at the Dev level that I am unable to dive deeper into.
