River Rocks Hole drilling

Hello everybody
Trying to drill hole on those river rocks.
I am using a JPT MOPA 300W on a 110mm Lens.
Air assist pointing downward.
Digging stops after 4mm. If I go higher the rock vitrification starts. If I stay or go lower nothing happens. Wobbling makes vitrification fast so I stopped using it.
I use Offset fill seems to work better then Fill.

If anyone has any tips or tricks for this job. I think I’ll have to use a drill for the rest. But i’m sure it is possible.

Thanks

An F100mm lens has a depth of focus around 600 microns (0.6mm), so you have to lower it as you drill deeper.

Interesting application…

Yes, interesting!

Maybe could move this to the Fried Some Rocks! thread?

Just wondering what time it took to dig 4mm.

Do you have a longer lens? Blasting holes in river rocks may work acceptably well with a larger field, and having more depth of focus would likely serve you well.

Personally, I find I use my longer lenses more often for depth of usable focus than for their larger field sizes.

5min, then a crust prevemt digging

Thanks, Rock getting hot I suppose. I wonder if cooling period at 3mm would allow further digging or air maybe there was a buildup of dust in the hole.
