I’m new here and a very satisfied user of Lightburn, but I’m encountering an issue after the last update and could use some answers! I switched back over to the rotary on my Boss 3655 Trocen AWC laser, and a file that has always worked is now engraving entirely too small. The length of the engraving is correct, but the height is not. The only thing that has changed was I updated to a new version of Lightburn recently, so I figured that could be a good place to start! Any and all thoughts are appreciated!
You didn’t mention if it’s a chuck or wheel rotary…?
Generally when this occurs, in all probability, the steps/rotation got modified. You can ensure you are in the proper inches or mm, but that would effect both axes.
Well, that’s a good question. It’s kind of a modified wheel rotary specifically for an operation I do on some of my parts. I understand the steps per rotation thing and spent a lot of time working that out a while back. The laser and settings have been perfect for many many months, and now all of a sudden they’re WAY off and I’m trying to figure out why.
The only thing that has changed is installing the new version of Lightburn. With that in mind, I called Boss tech support, and they said they had been getting a lot of calls from customers with rotary issues after the last Lightburn update. So, I went back to the previous version. Still no luck. It’s only rotating about 1/5 of the total circumference of the piece I want to engrave, so I thought I’d just try to increase the width of the graphic by 5x. Also, no luck. Still only rotates 1/5 of the way. I’ve changed my steps per rotation at the controller from 10,000 down to 10, and it still rotates 1/5 of the way. I’ve changed the ‘diameter’ setting at the controller from 5-500, and surprise, it still only rotates 1/5 of the way. Interestingly, I can jog the Y axis and get 360+ degrees of rotation, so it’s not as if the stepper motor just won’t turn. So, needless to say, I don’t understand!
It should work with the same steps/rotation. I looked around the forum and there are a lot of issues that appear for rotary and update. However all that I looked at were operator error.
Changing configuration, likes steps/rotation is a waste of time. There is an issue somewhere…
Set the steps/rotation back to what it should be and look elsewhere.
Might search the forum for something. Maybe I missed it. I searched on ‘rotary update’ and got a sizeable list. No real fruit where I looked. Don’t know what else to suggest… I’ll have to think on it.
I’m clearly no expert or I wouldn’t be desperately looking for answers in the forum, but I feel like signs are pointing to the rotary itself going bad? Machine settings are the same and I’m in a previous version of Lightburn (pre-issues, I think). Also, it’s my understanding that Lightburn doesn’t even affect any rotary settings for those of us using a Trocen-AWC controller, correct? So, powers of deduction point to the hardware at this point. Thoughts?
Nope. The steps per Rotation for the Rotary are always set by the Software, either LaserCAD oder Lightburn.
So it might absolutely be possible that something changed there during the update.
Did you already check if the settings (steps/rot) are the same as before the Problem, or do you still assume that without checking?
I can’t seem to find anywhere in Lightburn that lets me change any of that. It’s the same on the controller. Also, changing those settings on the controller yielded no change.
