Ruida controller responds over USB but cannot receive jobs on Windows 11 (works perfectly on macOS)

I’m stuck with a very strange problem after spending many hours troubleshooting.

Machine

  • CO₂ laser
  • Ruida controller
  • Firmware: RDLC-V50.01.06
  • Working area: 1300 × 900 mm

LightBurn

  • Windows: LightBurn Pro 2.1.02
  • Mac: LightBurn Pro 2.0.05

Operating Systems Tested

  • Windows 11 Home 25H2 (Build 26200.8655)
  • macOS Sequoia

The strange part

The laser works perfectly from my MacBook using the same USB cable.

However, on Windows, LightBurn detects the controller but cannot send any jobs.


What works on Windows

  • Device Manager detects the controller as USB Serial Device (COM3).
  • Driver loaded is Microsoft usbser.
  • LightBurn connects to COM3.
  • “Get Controller Status Info” works correctly.
  • LightBurn reads the controller firmware and statistics successfully.

Controller Info returns:

Firmware:
RDLC-V50.01.06

So LightBurn can clearly communicate with the controller.


What does NOT work

  • Home button does nothing.
  • Frame does nothing.
  • Go To Origin does nothing.
  • Sending any file immediately fails with:

There was a problem sending data to the laser.
The machine may be busy or paused.


Controller Status

The controller display shows:

  • Sys normal
  • Idle
  • No paused job
  • No alarm
  • No active running file

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Installed LightBurn on two different Windows 11 computers.
  • Same problem on both.
  • Same USB cable.
  • Same machine.
  • Removed and recreated the Ruida device.
  • Reinstalled USB Serial Device.
  • Confirmed COM3.
  • Confirmed usbser driver.
  • Restarted Windows and controller multiple times.
  • Reinstalled LightBurn.
  • Created device manually.
  • Automatic discovery also tested.
  • Controller is not paused.
  • Machine works perfectly from macOS over the same USB connection.

My conclusion

Because:

  • The controller works.
  • The USB cable works.
  • The USB port works.
  • macOS communicates perfectly.
  • Windows can read controller information but cannot write/send jobs.

It seems Windows can perform read operations but write operations fail.

Has anyone seen this before?

Could this be:

  • Windows 11 25H2 issue?
  • Ruida firmware compatibility?
  • USB communication problem?
  • Something specific to firmware RDLC-V50.01.06?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Has this machine ever worked with Windows? Is this a brand new install? Another user reports a problem with the latest Windows update from yesterday or the day before causing their machine to stop working.

Is using Ethernet an option for you? That is a much more stable connection with Ruida controllers.

The machine used to work with Windows. The problem started after updating LightBurn.

Since then, I have tested two different Windows 11 computers, and both show exactly the same behavior. LightBurn can read the controller information successfully, but any command that sends data (Home, Frame, Send Job) fails with the “machine may be busy or paused” message.

I’ll buy an Ethernet cable and test the connection that way, since I understand it’s the recommended method for Ruida controllers. I’ll report back with the results.

Are you sure it was the Lightburn update and not a Windows update that caused the issue? Like I said, there was a recent Windows update that has caused at least one other user problems and about a year ago there was a Windows update that affected many users.

Nevertheless Ethernet is the best way.

I cannot help you solve this, but I can say that I am having the exact same problem with my 100w JPT Fiber Lase (On Windows 11 Home version 25H2).

I also have a MAC and I have no problems running this on the MAC.

Yes, it started immediately after updating LightBurn.

I also tried bypassing USB and connecting directly via an Ethernet cable, but I couldn’t get the connection working either.

Unfortunately, after spending many hours troubleshooting, I gave up and switched to another software so I could keep working.

If anyone has found the root cause or a permanent fix for this issue, I’d really appreciate hearing about it.

You could also reinstall a previous version of Lightburn that worked.

Most people have issues with the lan connection because they don’t understand how it works.

You can’t directly connect to a port that has no IP address. Which is your computer, even though the Ruida knows it’s own address, your pc port expects to talk to a DHCP server to get an address for itself..


Run it to your router. If you use the Internet, all of these drivers and paths have been worked out and tested to the infinite degree. When it connects it will make the usb go by the wayside.

The Ruida has a static address, meaning it’s not going to change. Your router expects a device to query it’s DHCP to get an address, which the Ruida cannot do. You need to tell your DHCP in your router to skip the lasers address. If not, it may issue duplicate IP’s which doesn’t work out so well.

You should be able to tell the router that the laser adderss is a fixed address and it will always assign it to the laser.

Which other software is working? It sounds like you had a driver issue, and if the other software can communicate with the laser, it indicates that its installer came with a driver.

I’d be eager to hear if LightBurn now works if you can run a quick test

The LightBurn installer also comes with drivers for a DSP controller like your RuiDa. You would need to tick this box in the last step of the installer:

“FTDI” is the manufacturer of the Serial-USB chip in most, if not every RuiDa controller.
We only know your firmware version. Which exact controller do you have?

With your galvo laser, it’s a similar story as my previous message, but you’ll need to tick the other box Install EzCad3 / EzCad3 driver
If your controller is a BSL, you should have receveived the necessary driver from the manufacturer instead.
