Set a shape or Text to fill but still shows on screen as a line

My shapes (which are closed) and text still show as lines even when set to fill on the screen. When I go to preview they show as fill but how can I make them show as fill on the screen?
Running on a MacBook Pro with vs. 1.1.03

Select one of the Filled View Styles in the Window menu.
