Hello, I am experimenting with engraving on slate and the attached images are a buddy of mine’s logo. As you can see on the original form there is quite a bit of detail. I realize that I will not be able to get that level on slate, but I would like to improve what I have, if possible. I used Inkscape to trace the bitmat and convert the jpg to a svg. Engraving speed was 400/40 and the photo of the two finished products are done with both a 1.5" and 2.5" focal length AP lens. Attached are pics of the settings, original logo, converted logo and finished products.

I would say detail on the left slate is pretty good considering it is rock. The loss of detail on the right one appears to be due to the rock texture. Maybe sand that one flat first.
