Are you using Borax?

Borax is a naturally occurring mineral also known as sodium borate, a chemical compound of the element boron12. It is a soft, white, many-sided crystal that dissolves readily in water1. Borax is the common name for the chemical sodium tetraborate, a salt of boric acid2. It is known as a cleaning product, but has many other uses, including2:

Dissolved into water and sprayed on the woood, BORAX leaves a very dark engraving behind.

It is widely talked about on Youtube.

Probably much more famous for its “Twenty Mule Team
than it is for adding contrast to laser engraved wood.

Your engraving looks black. I can only get that with Borax.

Im dating myself but i remember the TV show. Twenty Mule Team

Have you tried to defocus for a darker engrave? If not, try 5,%, 10%,15%,20% longer focus settings. The results are still pretty crisp for precision - it just gets darker.

I defocus all my engraves. Never have that kind of contrast.
