Snapmaker ray laser head not moving

Hi guys, i haven’t used my laser for a while now but it used to work perfectly. Now i wanted to do a project and the laser head in not moving properly. Its like its stuck or something. I have attached a video showing whats happening while to hit the start button. If anyone can assist i would be great-full!

I dont see a video attached Andreas.

Perhaps the machinery has become gummed up.

If it’s a belt-driven machine, then you can feel for undue resistance: with the power off, push the laser head across the entire extent of the X and Y axes.

If it uses leadscrews, we’ll need more details about which machine you have.

Those must be hosted elsewhere, perhaps on Youtube, with a link here.

You are right, the movement with the power off is not smouth at all. is that fixable?

Certainly!

With the power off and moving the head / gantry slowly by hand, check for:

  • Parts rubbing together
  • Cables snagging on protrusions
  • Loose parts

Assuming it’s that machine, then the axes ride on linear bearings that should not cause any problems. However, don’t overlook the possibility of grit in the bearings: they should not feel rough as you move the machinery.

A guide written for Sculpfun lasers will be helpful, because many of the parts will be familiar:

Guide to mechanical adjustments and maintenance

Finding the problem may require dismantling the enclosure to get access to the parts, so take plenty of pictures as you work to eliminate any question about where a part or a screw came from.

Hi Andreas

What I see in the video is similar to an issue I had quite a while ago but it was resolved by using a command that I got from snapmaker support.

Firstly, I would contact support and provide description and the video link.

If you wish, you can remove the laser module and the bracket (use the tools provided). Look up snapmaker maintainance wiki or check website.

The dust covers that hide the belts are easy to remove (treat them gently) and inspect the belts etc. I doubt you will find much problems there. The motors are accessed at the Axis end caps but I didnt go there.

Was the machine moved while not in use, is it all level and square

Check all your cable connections are clean and well attached (just so you can say you did it).

Are you using Absolute or User origin? Inform support of all details and send screenshots of Error-Codes or Alarms.

They will help you get back to normal very quickly.
