Start button not working. Machine homes, but when I click start nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? I have an Ortur Laser Pro2

I downloaded a file, set it up on my workspace and hit home button. The laser went where it should be. Then I hit start, and nothing. I know the laser works because I made a project right before this one. Could it have something to do with the file I downloaded?

Make sure your object is on a layer that is set to output. Use the preview button to see what the machine thinks it should be printing. Always helps to get a screen capture to show us what you see.

Layer 2 (red) is set to output
Layer 5 (orange) is NOT set to output

You see how the sunrise is not sent to the PREVIEW ??

This is what I’m trying to engrave. It’s a test, but it’s not engraving. The laser goes to the top right and looks like it’s gonna go, but it does one swipe and then nothing.

You have units expressed as inches/minute. 2,000 in/m is 50,800 mm/m which is much faster than your laser is capable of moving.

Reduce speed to about the 75 in/m range and test. You’ll need to further refine speed from there.

Note that diode laser settings you’ll see expressed in most cases will be listed in terms of mm/m so you’ll need to convert appropriately. Or you could change the units that you use in Edit->Settings.

And this is the reason that it helps soooo much to see what is shown on the screen when there is a problem. Excellent diagnosis, Doctor!

OK, so I fixed everything and still get nothing when I hit the start button.

I’m a total newbie with this laser, so I’m probably missing something really obvious.

Here is another example of something I want to engrave on my wasteboard. I followed all the instructions on setting it up, but when I hit start I get nothing.

Can you describe everything that you notice when you press the Play button? Any small detail could be useful.

What are the contents of the Console when this occurs?

Can you confirm that Preview shows you the contents as you expect before attempting the burn?

The preview shows what should engrave.

Absolutely nothing happens when I click on the Start button. When I click on the frame button, the laser head moves a bit and the line that shows the status says busy - with a timer and 99%, and it stays there until I hit the stop button.

This is what the console shows:

Can you confirm that the power adapter is plugged in and working correctly? Make sure you’re getting power at the outlet as well. Do you have a voltmeter or multimeter in order to test the adapter?

In Console type ? followed by enter several times in the entry field then return the results here please.

Power adapter is plugged in and working correctly. Just before I sent this message, I engraved a small test item -it worked perfectly.

I don’t have a voltmeter.

This changes things. I was under the impression that the machine never worked.

If you rerun the smaller job, does it work every time?

VA values show voltage levels that should be fine.

Can you push Save Gcode in Laser window and save the file using .txt extension? Post here. I want to confirm the contents of what’s being sent to the laser.

grid.txt (117.9 KB)

I just tried to rerun the small test project I did, and I’m getting the same thing. Nothing when I hit the start button.

I really appreciate your help.

This sounds like to me that this is potentially an intermittent issue.

The gcode looks fine to me which indicates this is either a failure to communicate to the controller or something is acting-up on the controller side.

A few things to check:

  1. Can you rerun ? a few times now and return results? I want to make sure voltage is still good
  2. Do you have another USB cable that you could try to use?
  3. With or without a different cable try a different USB port on the computer
  4. Are you using a USB hub? If so, try connecting directly.

Can you note anything else that might be unique about your connection situation?

I don’t have another USB cord like this one. I did put the usb into a different port on the computer and still the same thing.

I can’t think of anything unique. Everything was working fine until yesterday.

This indicates that your design will go beyond the boundaries of your laser. Do you have any part of your design outside the workspace? Check this by typing ctrl-shift-A on the workspace or Window->Frame Selection. Does the selection go beyond the workspace? If so, find and eliminate the portion of the design outside the workspace and test again.

So this issue is new?

Can you provide these:

  1. Screenshot of Edit->Device Settings
  2. Try the jogging controls in Move window. Do they behave as you expect?
  3. Run this in Console and return results:
$$
$#

The left, right, up and down buttons work fine in the Move window. The buttons in the corner do nothing but open up the console when clicked on.

Can you confirm that there was no part of the design outside of the workspace?

Can you try rerunning $# again? If you continue to get the EEPROM read failure that indicates a potential firmware issue.

In either case you’re running an older version of the firmware. I suggest you upgrade as that may alleviate some of the issues you’re having.

I don’t see anything in the basic settings that would cause an issue but I am curious about the offsets not coming back.

Looks to me like everything is inside the workspace. I sized the image to fit inside. I scrolled outside the workspace also to make sure there wasn’t anything there too.

I can’t thank you enough for your help. Based on the help I’ve been receiving, I will be purchasing Lightburn when my trial period is over. The customer service alone is worth the price!
