so the start, pause and stop button disappeared and I am unsure how to get them back. Any suggestions? Is there a setting. Yes I did hit the x button and it caused it to go away. My fault. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
just click with high mouse button in the top menu list then the settings menu will appear and you can choose what you need

You can always choose '‘reset to default layout’ in the Window menu.
