Still struggling with layers

OK, I’m sorry, but I am still struggling with the unconventional concept of layer settings being exactly the same in a new file as the last open file.

Is there a way to set the layer settings to a default configuration so that every NEW file created has the same settings?

This way, I can change, rename, and fiddle with the layers in my current file w/o having them transported to the next new file.

Layers need to be specific to the project on hand and will likely differ for almost every other project.

In our previous go-round on this issue:

The suggestion was:

When you start a new design, it will use the layer settings from the previous design, unless you select the Load default layer settings on new or restart option in Edit → Settings → File, in which case all the layers will have their default values.

Have you turned that option on?

In order to set the default values for all the layers that will appear in new projects, the suggestion was:

With that turned on, the Make Default button along the bottom of the full Cut Settings Editor window becomes significant, as it makes the current layer settings the default for that layer whenever you start a new project.

Have you set up the defaults for all the layers you want to load in new projects?

If so, do those default layer settings appear when you start a new project?

If you’ve turned the first option on and set the default layer values, yet those values do not appear when you start a new project, screenshots of the relevant settings will help track down what’s going on.

No, there is no “Edit → Settings → File” option.

Thus, the struggle.

Yes, I have a project with all the settings.

You can find here:

Yes, tht option is set.

You must go to each layer and actually set a default or use “Make default for all layers” for this to take.

I did

Double-click the layer to open the ‘Cut Settings Editor’. Once you have the defaults set the way you’d like, select ‘Make Default’ for a single layer or ‘Make Default for All’ if you want all layers to Open New with these settings.

I them created a new file and did nopt have the settings form my 29 layers file
The blue came in as FILL

not, LINE.

Did you restart LightBurn after turning on the ‘Load default layer settings on new or restart’ button? I don’t remember if that is required, but wouldn’t hurt. Then do this test again, open the Blue Layer and change to Line and set the rest of the defaults for Blue, then hit Make Default.

Now test again and let us know how you progress.

That setting was already, but I think I found the issue based on your last reply.

LightBurn doesn’t seem to do well with multiple instances running.

If I open file A I get the defaults as expected. If I open a 2nd Instance and make a change, the next new file gets the change, not the defaults.

If I open file A and make a change then close file A and creat File B I get the defaults as expected.

Also, note that layers only exist where a shape has been assigned to that layer. You will not see all 29 layers when you open a new file.

As an aside, I don’t mean to distract from the main Topic but I’m noticing that your device may be configured as GRBL-M3. This is almost certainly not what you want. You probably want plain GRBL. I’d suggest editing your device and changing the type to GRBL.

LightBurn will only save changes from the last closed instance.

On that side tangent, I am very new to Laser Cutters. I have a TTS-55 and when I asked LB to get the Laser infor that what it came up with.

Right now I am not connected, it’s out the shop (thus the wrong port). But I can look into that tomorrow when I plug back in.
