Stl to lightburn for cutting

Someone gave me some stl files of gears from fusion 360, which i do not have that software.

they 3d printed just fine but now i would like to cut them out in plywood using my ortur laser master 2 5.5 wat unit.

the only cad software i have is sketchup but these particular stl files import as a bunch of spaghetti looking noodles and are useless. they do not even look like gears.

so how to i import them into LB as the correct siaze they were exported as so i can cut them?

thansk

Take a look at tinkercad.com. It’s free and online. You can import STL with that, reorient the design, and then export as SVG. I don’t know if it will necessarily treat these differently than what you’re seeing in Sketchup.

When exporting to SVG it will use the profile in the XY plane so make sure you orient the shape that way.

Ill give it a go. Will it export the correct dimensions?

Thanks

I don’t believe it changes dimensions so as long as the original file was created correctly it should work.

I’ve only used it a handful of times and was not surprised by the output.

ok, anyway to fill in this hole so it doesnt cut that section out with in lightburn? technically its only supposed to be cut half way down the plywood

the rack gear slides into the slot. I can cut it out with a dremel with no issue, so i just need to fill that area.

thanks

So does this mean the original issue has been addressed and this is a new issue? Not sure where that leaves this.

If I’m understanding your question you should be able to fill that slot in a few different ways:

  1. Use Node Edit tool, hover over each node that you want to remove and hit ‘D’ key.
  2. Fill the hole with a perfectly sized rectangle, then select both the rectangle and the key and do Tools->Union.

converting to svg yes, but now its trying to fill that gap in lightburn

Okay great. Were you able to successfully execute one of the two listed strategies?

yes, i just figured out how to edit nodes in lightburn and it closed the loop easily. Now i have another issue that is making me want to throw my laser off the roof. Ill post that one next
