Successful Diode laser material test on brass using Omtech Laser Marking Powder

The photo shows the result of a material test on brass using the Omtech laser Marking powder, diluted with 99% alcohol as per the instructions. This test was performed using my Lasertree K30 diode laser.

The markings are permanent, pass the nail scratch test and don’t rub away unless wet & dry used . The actual test included powers up to 100% but I didn’t put the Omtech coating on all the brass and its pretty obvious where the coating stopped - without it there’s nothing marked on the brass.

Applying the coating is easy using the supplied foam applicator. I let it settle for a few seconds then used a heat gun to dry it - its ready to laser within 30 seconds of being applied.

Looking at the results, every speed at and above 25% (approx7.5w) gave solid cover. I also used Omtech powder to engrave a small (9mm round) logo on a thin (1mm) piece of plated brass and had a good result using 14% power, speed 750mm/m and 1 pass. I kept the power low to avoid heating and warping the thin metal.

The Omtech laser powder is a lower cost than the alternatives (in UK its under £19 on Amazon) and looks like it will go a long way. I already had the alcohol

Hi Dave,

Thank you for sharing these results!

I wonder what kind of witchcraft this powder is.

The marketing info and feedback on Amazon shows it also works well on aluminium and stainless steel, but I’ve not tried that. Powerful magic!!

I looked up the product on the OMTech website, and is this the laser marking powder you’re referring to? I’m currently using the OMTech 50w fiber laser for my engraving, but this is the first time I’ve heard about laser marking powder. Thanks for sharing your test results, very interesting!

There is a number of these for marking with a laser.

I use LBT100, there is also Cermark and Brilliance.

I believe both of these used LBT100, mug with co2, the cat was done on the fiber machine.

Most of these are designed for a co2, but some work fine with some of the led machines, I’ve used my fiber just as well.
