Currently I am using an old, 50+ yr, kitchen table without the extensions. I believe it is solid cherry. Very solid, very well built. You know, made before a certain Swiss company existed lol. It is too small for two laser enclosures though. I can’t seem to find any work table wider than 24". What is everyone using? I just might have enough carpentry skills to build one of my own but would prefer not to.
I had a similar situation with a CNC router. I ended up placing a piece of 3/4" plywood over the top surface and 2x4" framing studs to create a support structure that secures to the existing table.
Thanks Luis. I still have to find a permanent home for the lasers and my other stuff. Either a frame a basement room out or refab the ridicuously large shed we have. The shed has no heat or AC, and would need the ceiling insulated and either drywalled or plywooded over. It’s been neglected a bit to say the least. I guess that will determine my table. Appreciate your response.
An old cherry wood table sounds to me well worth preserving, and not to be used as a work table. (That said, I use my parents’ kitchen table, bought in 1946, as a work table for painting miniatures.) The Swiss company, is that perhaps the Swedish company IKEA you mean? They actually make great tables of many sizes, or you can just buy table legs and a table top of any size or make you prefer. Best of luck finding, or making, the work table of your dreams.
Mine is built out of 2x4’s with casters, and 3/4 plywood base.
Salvage quartz (composite) kitchen countertop.
The standard depth is 25" but if you turn a piece sideways and it sticks out a little, it’s not going to tip and fall off the dining room workbench.
Thanks…and yes I did mean Ikea. This is my g/f’s parent’s old table and it was stored in the garage for years and years. I’d like to think at least I am using it again. I do keep it covered and I am using a home made enclosure made with USB and always a steel plate on top of the bottom. So far it’s in great shape…or as good as can be after being stored the way it was.
Thanks…my enclosure now is 31.5" and table is 33" width. I guess it’s not a huge issue atm because I do not see me using the Ikier again except for emergency jobs and that isn’t a concern for now. I’ve seen people using Vevor tables, but 24" won’t really do it for me.
